Every four years, the World Cup captures the attention of countless fans. The global soccer event culminates with one champion on the field, but the competition itself is a winning event for all of us. It is an example of the special ability of athletics to unify, focus and inspire. Reminder: Fourth of July celebration to be held in downtown Lafayette

The local Stars & Stripes Celebration will be July 4 at Riehle Plaza, Second and Main streets in downtown Lafayette, and on the adjacent John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge. Concert performers include the Purdue Summer Jazz Band at 7 p.m. and the Lafayette Citizens Band at 8 p.m. Followed by fireworks about 10 p.m.
