The purpose of University Stores is to purchase commonly used items
in bulk quantity at a reduced cost and resell those items to the
departments on campus at a lower cost than they can be purchased
individually. We also purchase in bulk and issue specialty items
for departments that do not have storage space for large quantity
buys or the means to charge several cost centers as the items are
issued.
Our
History - In the early 80's there were several storerooms
located across campus. General Stores was located in Service Building
and reported to Purchasing. Chemistry, Bioscience, Physics and Pharmacy
Stores were managed and operated by the individual departments.
In order to take advantage of operational efficiencies and volume
purchases the decision was made to combine all the storerooms under
one management and inventory system. This was the beginning of University
Stores. About the same time, it was decided University Stores would
be self-supporting. To generate the revenue for funding, a mark-up
would be added to the products. Today University Stores consist
of General, Chemistry, Lilly and Pharmacy Stores and are all a part
of Materials Management and Distribution. We stock over 9,500 inventory
items in 37 categories. Annually we process approximately 90,000
requisitions with over 200,000 line items, which generate around
$5,000,000 in sales. Currently all four storerooms are vendors in
the Ariba requisitioning system.
