United Nations General Assembly: Sept. 24-26
Purdue invited the Notre Dame University to co-present at an official “side event” during the 2007 United
Nations General Assembly. The universities made a 90-minute presentation on their capabilities and initiatives
that was attended by about 100 people as well as representatives of eight nations, the Vatican’s Undersecretary of
State and five UN agencies. Foundation Relations helped to organize the visit.
Purdue presenters were: Al Rebar, Discovery Park; Joe Pekny, E-Enterprise Center; Dan Smith, Pharmacy; Richard
Kuhn, Biology/College of Science; Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer, International Programs in Agriculture; and Paul Robinson, Cytometry for Life project.

Additional meetings: The teams also had meetings with UN agencies, nation representatives and others to present
Purdue’s global health capacity and seek funding. These meetings included:
- Clinton Foundation Global Initiative executive director and technology deployment chief met with the Purdue team just hours before the Clinton Foundation’s annual meeting opened at the UN
- Doris Duke Foundation’s African Health Initiative team
- UN agencies: UNICEF, UNAIDS and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA)
- Nations including South Africa, Lesotho, Benin, Botswana, Kenya
