Thanks for the Memories...

Although more than 50 years have passed since our undergraduate days at Purdue University, in some ways it seems like just yesterday.  Purdue provided us an excellent education and a head start in life.  But our time at Purdue was more than books and classrooms.  It was the experience of being on our own for the first time and the beginning of life-long friendships.  Our campus experience and social interactions became as much a part of our lives as the formal education we received.

To honor our University and the Class of 1955, we will make a gift to one of the great Purdue traditions that surely touched all of our lives during our Purdue years.  Our goal is to raise $100,000 for The Class of 1955 Sweet Shop Endowment.

We all have special memories of The Sweet Shop.  The Original Sweet Shop was established in 1927 and has served thousands upon thousands of Purdue students, staff, faculty and alumni in its 78 year history.  Our 1955 Debris mentions “Sweet Shop Labs,” and pictures us in The Sweet Shop decked out in formal attire at an after-dance gathering.  We ate, studied, met friends and even slept in The Sweet Shop.  A few of us probably even had our first date with our future spouses at The Sweet Shop.  It’s a great Purdue tradition that, like an old friend, was always there.

But The Sweet Shop was showing its age.  Outdated equipment and old furnishings could no longer keep up with the steady demand on one of the most popular gathering places on campus.  So the decision was made – Hail Purdue! - to keep The Sweet Shop, rather than lease the space to an outside restaurant chain.  In January 2004 The Sweet Shop temporarily closed and underwent a $1.6 million renovation, reopening in July 2004.  The menu still includes the old favorites plus many new items – and, of course, those delicious shakes and malts made with the Purdue Creamery recipe ice cream.  Remember those?

Our 50th anniversary class project, The Class of 1955 Sweet Shop Endowment, will help insure that The Sweet Shop is around for many more generations of the Purdue family to enjoy.  Our lead gift of $100,000 will establish this endowment and a plaque will be prominently placed in The Sweet Shop recognizing our class gift on the occasion of our 50th anniversary.  Although others may support this fund in the future, it will always be called The Class of 1955 Sweet Shop Endowment

Supporting your class gift is a great way to say that you care about the future of Purdue.  Gifts to our project can be made by check, credit card, or online by clicking the “Purdue-gift” button on this page.  You may also choose to pledge your contribution over a three-year period to maximize your gift.  You employer may double or even triple your gift—click here to see if your company offers a matching gift program
