In the home stretch

Alumni and friends continue to enthusiastically support the University and its successes in advancing new discoveries, educating top students, and reaching out to the state and the world beyond. During fiscal year 2005–2006, The Campaign for Purdue has made great strides toward its $1.5 billion fundraising goal.

Of the 54 capital projects set forth in campaign case statements, 28 have been completed; 18 partially funded projects are in the works with ongoing solicitations; and eight, not yet started, are seeking leadership gifts.

More than 86 percent of the $600 million facilities goal — approximately $518 million — has been raised. Three of the other four main categories for which the campaign is raising funds — scholarship support, faculty teaching and research support, and academic program support — have all reached the 95 percent threshold. The final category goal for unrestricted gifts to the University and its many units has been reached.

Campaign Highlights

Beyond the fall campaign celebrations outlined in the Winter 2006 Leadership magazine, there were significant fundraising highlights this past year.

A $5 million gift from Richard T. Doermer and his family will provide scholarship support on Purdue’s Fort Wayne campus.

A $9.8 million gift of real estate from John and Jane Shine of New Albany, Indiana, to the College of Technology will provide the site for a new 30,000- to 40,000-square-foot Purdue Technology Center.

A $1 million grant, renewable for up to four addi-tional years, from alumnus Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., of San Francisco, will support research and program development in Purdue’s Department of Engineering Education. The department will collaborate with Purdue’s Discovery Learning Center in Discovery Park and other academic units, to develop innovative learning and teaching approaches in K-12 science classrooms.

Campaign Chicago, which kicked off in April, has raised more than $90 million toward its $100 million goal. The Goodwin Chair Challenge, activated in February 2006, will create 20 chairs with a $750,000 cash match. During the fiscal year, commitments for 12 Goodwin chairs have been secured.

The Purdue Opportunity Awards Program is welcoming its third class to Purdue this fall, with funding having grown to more than $7.6 million. The program was launched three years ago as a $5.5 million need-based student scholarship initiative to be awarded annually to a student from each Indiana county.
