Thanks to Peter Rayner and Rachel Law for organizing and hosting everyone.
Many thanks to Ian Enting for hosting a wonderful get together at his home.
Also, thanks to those that provided presentations during the course of the week-long working meeting.
What was accomplished
Work on finalizing the Science paper was completed. This contains the annual mean, level 1, control results from the experiment. We are about to submit to Science.
Tutorial on the Level II inverse code (both cyclostationary, seasonal and a time-dependant) was completed. This code was made available to all the T3 modelers.
“Clean-up” of the currently submitted set of Level II results was performed.
Future investigations and leaders were identified:
– Rachel L./Yu-Han C.
– Kevin G./Shamil M./Peter R.
with genetic algorithm.
- Takashi Maki
– Lori B./Britt S.
- Kevin G./Scott D.
-Philippes, David B., Peter R.
– Ian E.
– Peter R.
- Shamil M.
A new project was proposed in which the TransCom modelers would be asked to run two new tracers through their models: O2 and N2. This will facilitate an experiment by the R. Keeling group at Scripps Institute on APO. Tegan Blaine and Kevin Gurney will be getting a protocol and input datasets together and will inform the network when they are ready.
A fourth T3 meeting was agree upon. The date (February 2002) and location (Hawaii) are tentative but it is being proposed that this meeting segue with a meeting of the BASIN experiment. Kevin Gurney and Kathy Hibbard will be organizing the logistics
Some further work will be needed to form a more focused framework for the Level III experiment. Discussions are ongoing.
Authorship. It was agreed that a two year horizon would be set within which the TransCom modeling group must be formally included as authors on all papers utilizing the T3 model output. After that time, the output data would be considered free and open for anyone to use. A succinct way of including the large number of authors will be constructed for future use. This will involve an abbreviated author reference such as “TransCom authors” in a formal paper author list with the individual listing elsewhere in the paper.
Work has begun on the “longer” T3 control results paper with Kevin Gurney and Rachel Law taking the lead. This paper will elaborate on the Science submission but investigate model-to-model differences in more detail but leave aside the comparison to Fan et al.
The group was encouraged to submit abstracts to the Challenges of a Changing Earth Conference in Amsterdam (July 10-13, 2001). There is a poster cluster session on TransCom and a main session on the Global Carbon Cycle.
The group was also encouraged to submit abstracts to the CO2 conference in Sendai Japan (October1 5, 2001). Referencing TransCom on the submission (submit to “Model: Atmosphere”) will ensure that we get a session at the conference.
What's Next?
Work will continue along two general lines of inquiry. On the one hand further investigation by many of the T3 investigators will proceed on the level 1 results. We will also be pursuing the Control case for the Level II inversion in addition to the many possible sensitivity studies on the Level II results.
We hope to have a lot of results on this work ready for the Sendai Conference in October 2001.
