Shelter Animal Medicine Poster Session

Since January 2009, a 1-credit elective course in Shelter Animal Medicine has been offered to second and third year DVM students annually. The course covers a range of shelter topics and related animal welfare issues and allows students to explore the concept of population medicine in a shelter environment. In Spring 2009, students created posters on a variety of shelter medicine topics as part of their assessment. Dr. Litster (Director of the Purdue Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program) worked with Dr. Laurie Peek (Veterinary Programs Director of Maddie's Fund) to create poster titles for the students to choose from. The posters were printed free of charge by the Purdue SVM Deptartment of Medical Illustration. The final session of the course was a poster event so that students could participate in the peer-review process. Posters were assessed using a range of criteria including originality, quality of writing, balance of viewpoint, visual appeal and clarity. The posters were displayed at the Purdue SVM during the following semester and stimulated many thought provoking discussions among faculty, staff and students.
