Indiana State Fair 2009
The Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine and the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association joined forces once again for the 27th Annual Spay or Castration Surgery Demonstration at the Indiana State Fair. During 16 days of the State Fair, two surgeries were performed daily. A total of 32 female dogs were spayed, providing great medical service to animals that were up for adoption through the Humane Society of Indianapolis. As of Sept. 15, 2009 all but 9 dogs had been adopted. Eighteen veterinarians, 16 fourth year veterinary students, and 35 registered veterinary technicians from around the state as well as from the School of Veterinary Medicine volunteered their time to take part in this time honored event at the State Fair. With approximately 973,000 attendees at the 2009 Indiana State Fair, we are confident that a good percentage of them were able to witness and learn from these surgery demonstrations. The veterinary surgery demonstrations are a “big hit” with fair goers, and each year there are many folks who come back to watch multiple surgeries. In addition to the surgery demonstrations, there were 12 veterinary demonstrations offered on topics ranging from endoscopy in a horse to poultry medicine. A Purdue Day booth allowed visitors to learn about the veterinary profession and let kids design their own pet bowl. The School of Veterinary Medicine and the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association look forward to the 2010 Indiana State Fair and welcome everyone to come out to the Fair and learn together about the importance of spaying your pets and the great level of skill and technology which maintains the safety of our patients.
