Scholarship of Engagement
This page contains resources for faculty and staff to accomplish our strategic goal of "providing service and knowledge that impact our global society" in a scholarly manner. Engagement activities at Purdue University include promoting: economic development; P-12 education; service and experiential learning; quality of life for constituents; and lifelong learning. Most of our activities at the School of Veterinary Medicine have an engagement component.
The "scholarship of engagement" is a concept by which engagement efforts are embraced as scholarly activities, equal to teaching and research. Scholarly engagement efforts are: tied directly to one's area of academic expertise; contribute to the public good; and, have demonstrated impact through assessment of outcomes. Assessment should demonstrate the continuum of engagement impact: (1) generation of new knowledge; (2) change in behavior or practice as a result of that knowledge; and (3) how the change in behavior or practice impacts the public good. One role of the Office of Engagement is to promote such scholarship by:
- providing links to resources on the scholarship of engagement
- providing notification of opportunities to speak at and to attend engagement conferences
- assisting with documentation of engagement efforts for promotion and tenure purposes
- facilitating collaborative efforts with communities, professional organizations, commodity groups, veterinarians, biomedical scientists, experts in synergistic areas, other universities, private industries, and government agencies
- providing notification of funding opportunities for engagement projects
