SVM Education Scholarship Fund
In 1999, we started a scholarship fund for veterinary students from proceeds from all of our continuing education activities plus donations from alumni and friends of the School. Since 1999, the scholarship has made it possible for 34 students to continue in school who otherwise would have had to leave due to financial reasons. Over $108,000 has been awarded!
Most of the students that apply for the DVM program already have a bachelor’s degree, and they face an additional four years of professional school and its associated debt. It is not uncommon for our students to graduate with accumulated debt of over $90,000 for instate students and $120,000 for non-resident students. Just think about those numbers for a minute. Student debt is a major concern for the School and the profession, because the prospect of a huge debt at graduation is a significant deterrent to anyone contemplating a career in veterinary medicine.
The School is doing all it can to address this problem through our development activities. Unfortunately, we have not been able to dispense any funds from this scholarship since the 2005-06 school year. If you feel that you are in a position to help share some of your success in life with students on the way up, please include your donation with your registration fee and mark the appropriate line on the registration form. You can help insure that the future of our profession will be in bright and able hands. Thank you for helping.
Sincerely,
Rose E. Raskin, DVM, PhD
