Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Awards

The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine celebrates the success of our students, staff, and faculty.  The Office of Engagement would like to congratulate our award recipients and encourage you to nominate individuals, teams, and projects for internal, university, and external awards.  To assist in the nomination process, this section of our website describes various awards and nomination information.

Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine School Awards

Freedom Award is awarded by Banfield, the Pet Hospital, to the School whose graduates that work for Banfield, distinguish themselves from their peers by demonstrating a commitment to provide year round profitable and high quality medical care (PUSVM 2009). 
 
Purdue University Internationalization Award is awarded to the academic unit at Purdue for leadership in student study abroad (PUSVM 2009)
 

 
PVM Award for Excellence in Teaching is awarded to honor faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine with consistent dedication and commitment to excellence in teaching and education of veterinary students, veterinary technology students, medical students, undergraduate and graduate students, interns/residents that has had impact on students and faculty. Recent awardees include Dr. Evelyn Kazacos (2006), Dr. Pete Bill (2008), and Dr. Larry Adams (2010).

PVM Career Teaching Award  is awarded to honor faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine with an exceptional track-record in teaching and education that has had a high impact on students and faculty for at least 20 years. Recent awardees are: Dr. Evelyn Kazacos (2007) and Dr. Kathy Salisbury (2009).  Nominations due in January of odd-numbered years.

Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award is awarded to an outstanding teacher who demonstrates superior ability in communicating the chosen material to students and stimulates their desire to master the material. This teacher will also recognize his/her teaching responsibility does not stop at the classroom door, and therefore, will be ready to aid and motivate students in a counseling and advisory capacity, either formally or informally. Recent awardees include: Dr. David Huse (2009), Dr. John Christian (2010), and Dr. Rebecca Packer (2011). Ballots due in March.

Weedon Faculty Recognition Award is awarded to the SVM faculty member who has been most helpful to the senior class in their pursuit of the degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Recent awardees include: Dr. Kathy Salisbury (2010, 2011) and Dr. Barrak Pressler (2009). Nominations due in March.

Plue Outstanding Teaching Award is awarded to truly outstanding teachers in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Teachers who make an extra effort to influence and inspire students. Recent awardees include:Dr. Gert Breur (2006), Dr. Bill Blevins (2007), Dr. Michel Levy (2008), and Dr. Margaret Miller (2009). Nominations due in March.

Carl Norden-Pfizer Animal Health Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes outstanding instructors who, through their ability, dedication, character, and leadership, contribute significantly to the advancement of the profession of veterinary medicine. Recent awardees include: Dr. Larry Adams (2009), Dr. Kevin Hannon (2010), and Dr. Pete Bill (2011). Ballots due March.

Elanco Teaching Excellence Award is awarded to a staff veterinary technician, teaching technologist, graduate student, intern, resident, or faculty member within the School of Veterinary Medicine who has taught students in class, labs, and/or clinical rotations and who demonstrates the ability to clearly communicate course content to students, facilitates skill acquisition, motivates students, demonstrates a continued willingness to facilitate student learning outside the formal classroom, laboratory, and/or clinic setting, is willing to counsel and mentor students, and provides a positive role model to students. Recent awardees include: Patrick Navarre BS, RVT (2010) and Mindy Anderson BS, RVT (2009)

PVM Award for Excellence in Service (Formerly Engagement) is awarded to an outstanding faculty or staff veterinarian who demonstrates excellence in engagement by expending significant efforts and having superior ability in providing public and professional services, with exceptional performance of assigned duties above and beyond that ordinarily expected of the position. Recent awardees include: Dr. Diane Bevier (2006); Dr. Mark Hilton (2007); Dr. Catherine Scott-Moncrieff (2008); Dr. Leon Thacker (2009); and Dr. Pat Wakenell (2010). Nominations are due in March.

Outstanding Staff Awards in the School of Veterinary Medicine are awarded to non-faculty permanent employees who demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following: service to the students, staff, faculty, and other constituents of the School; enhancing the image of the School with the public; public and professional service and relations; performance of assigned duties above and beyond that ordinarily expected of the position. One award is limited to nominess from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department. Recent awardees include: Amalia de Gortari (2006), Donna Griffey (2007), Patty Kirts (2008), and Pat Navarre (2009). The other award is limited to nominees from the departments of Basic Medical Sciences, Veterinary Administration, and Comparative Pathobiology. Recent awardees include: Ruth Brown (2006), Carol Wilson (2007), Barbara White (2008), and Mary Woodruff (2009). Nominations are due in March.

Outstanding Research Staff Award is awarded to non-faculty research staff to recognize, honor and highlight their talents and dedication. Recent awardees include: Patty Bonney (2006), Anisa Dunham (2007), and Debra Bohnert (2008). Nominations due in March.

Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence recognizes researchers whose innovative studies have advanced the science of veterinary medicine. Recent awardees include: Dr. Gert Breur (2009), Dr. Ramesh Vemulapalli (2010), and Dr. Lynetta Freeman (2011). Nominations due October.

PVM Faculty Research Excellence Award is awarded to a faculty member in the School of Veterinary Medicine with an exceptional track record, of at least 10 years, in sustaining an extramurally funded research program with a high impact nationally and internationally that has resulted in increased visibility and honor for the School of Veterinary Medicine and Purdue University. Recent awardees include:  Dr. Larry Glickman (2006) and Dr. Suresh Mittal (2008). Nominations due in December of even-numbered years.

PVM Career Research Excellence Award is awarded to a senior faculty member in the School of Veterinary Medicine with an exceptional track record, of at least 20 years, in sustaining an extramurally funded research program with a high impact nationally and internationally that has resulted in increased visibility and honor for the School of Veterinary Medicine and Purdue University. The 2007 awardee was Dr. Richard Borgens.  Nominations due in December of odd-numbered years.

PVM Award for Excellence in Research honors faculty who have demonstrated dedication and excellence in research: Dr. Timothy Ratliff (2011).

 

PVM Award for Excellence in Scholarship of Engagement honors faculty at the School of Veterinary Medicine who have demonstrated dedication and excellence in scholarly engagement endeavors that have impacted School of Veterinary Medicine constituents by addressing a community, professional, and/or societal need: Dr. Sophie Lelievre (2011) and Dr. Barrak Pressler (2010). Nominations due February of each year.

 


Purdue University Awards

Eudoxia Girard Martin Memorial Staff Recognition Award to honor "staff who accomplish their duties with a special caring and helpfulness to students, faculty and staff" was awarded to Carolyn Arnold in 2010.  

Purdue Black Graduate Association Engagement Award honors "individuals who have made a significant contribution to Engagement, Diversity and Community outreach at Purdue University", and was awarded to Dr. Kauline Davis in 2010 for her active role in supporting the ideals of the Black Graduate Association.

Spirit of the Land-Grant Mission Award is awarded to recognize faculty for excellence in integrating and promoting our core mission: discovery, engagement, and learning. This award is to highlight and celebrate faculty who have sucessfully developed an integrated, comprehensive program that benefits agriculture nationally or internationally. Nominations are due February.

Purdue Heroes recognizes individuals who have acted with persistence, selflessness, and integrity to overcome adversity, achieve an ambitious goal, or positively influence those around them in their lifetime. Nominations due February.

Violet Haas Award recognizes individuals, programs, or departments at Purdue that have facilitated the advancement of women in hiring, promotion, education and salary, or have enhanced a positive professional climate for women at the University. Nominations due February.  

Purdue University Awards for Excellence in Distance Learning recognize faculty and staff who demonstrate excellence in distance learning projects. Nominations due February.
 
Helping Students Learn Award recognizes Purdue University faculty, staff, and graduate students who have developed innovative (new and involving creativity and change) techniques to help students learn. Nominations due February.
 
Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award is the highest undergraduate teaching honor. Recent awardees include Dr. Pete Bill (2007-2008). Nominations due February.
 
The Book of Great Teachers honors faculty members, chosen by students and peers, who have devoted their lives to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Eligible faculty have 15 years of continuous service to Purdue. Nominations are requested every five years in March. The next cycle is 2012.
 

Purdue University Dreamer Award is presented annually to an individual or organization within the Purdue University community whose contributions embody Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of service to others and further the University's commitment to diversity.Nominations due December. 

 


Iverson Bell Recognition Award honors individuals for outstanding engagement around issues of diversity and inclusion and was awarded to Dr. Willie Reed in 2011.

Golden Egg Award from the Indiana State Poultry Association honors individuals for making a significant impact on Indiana's poultry industry and was awarded to Dr. Leon Thacker in 2011.

Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to the Rural People of Indiana "honors Purdue staff with a record of outstanding achievement and service to rural communities" and was awarded to Dr. Leon Thacker in 2010.

North Central Avian Disease Conference (NCADC) Meritorious Service Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the area of poultry health service and was awarded to  Dr. Ching Ching Wu in 2010.

National Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes outstanding instructors who, through their ability, dedication, character, and leadership, contribute significantly to the advancement of the profession of veterinary medicine. The national award is the most prestigious teaching award in veterinary medicine in the United States. Recent Purdue awardees include: Dr. Larry Adams (2009) and Dr. Kathy Salisbury (2007). 

Western Veterinary Conference Continuing Educator of the Year Award was awarded to Dr. Mark Hilton for Food Animal Medicine 2009 and to Julie Shaw, RVT, for Veterinary Technicians 2009.

American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians "Pioneers in Virology Award"  was awarded to Dr. Charles Kanitz in 2009.

Sagamore of the Wabash Award honored Dr. Leon Thacker in 2009 for his "loyalty and friendship, his wisdom and council, and his inspiration in leadership."

Indiana Veterinary Medical Association Veterinarian of the Year was awarded to Dr. Leon Thacker in 2009.

Faculty Award of Merit from the Purdue University Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta honor society was awarded to Dr. David Van Sickle in 2009.

Trustee Teaching Award from Indiana University was awarded to Dr. Regina Kreisle in 2010 and Dr. Jim Walker in 2009.

Indiana University School of Medicine Faculty Teaching Award was awarded to Dr. Regina Kreisle in 2010.

Indiana University School of Medicine Outstanding Basic Science Faculty Teaching Award was awarded to Dr. Regina Kreisle in 2010.
