Purdue's first Student Sustainablity Summit

establishes four key programs

Sustainability summit

In the Spring of 2013, several organizations at Purdue University came together to organize the first ever Student Sustainability Summit. The summit gathered student, faculty, and administration leaders to talk sustainability, describing the various initiatives underway, and putting themselves out there for anyone interested in sustainable living, learning, and research!

Key Reveals

The summit had FOUR key "reveals" for the Purdue community.

1) Emerging Leaders in Science & Society (ELISS) Program

The "Emerging Leaders in Science" Society (ELISS);program will be launched in the fall of 2013. The program will prepare Purdue graduate and professional students to work across disciplinary boundaries to help solve complex challenges ranging from health to environment to the economy.

2) Global Sustainability Student Representative

The Global Sustainability Institute(GSI)has created a new student representative position for its regular monthly meetings with the center directors, managing directors, and director of the Office of University Sustainability. The student rep serves as the liaison between the GSI and various student sustainability efforts, being involved in plans for future GSI events and initiatives.

3) At-Large Member of the Purdue Student Sustainability Council (PSSC)

The Purdue Student Sustainability Council (PSSC) added a new "at-large" membership position. The PSSC functions as an umbrella body, consisting of representatives from the various student organizations at Purdue, interested in sustainability.

4) Student Sustainability “SEED” Grant Program

The new Student Sustainability "SEED" Grant Program will be funded through student fees. The PSSC is currently creating the application process and anticipates putting out the call for proposals later this spring. Nearly $20,000 worth of funding support is hoped for!
