Learn More About Sustainable Not-for-profits

Sustainability doesn't stop at the borders of Purdue's Campus and involvement in sustainability shouldn't stop outside Purdue's borders either. It is important to be aware of and support groups that are attempting to keep the planet as green as possible.

Listed below are several groups that are helping build sustainability in Indiana:

Wabash River Enhancement Corporation: The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, WREC, is a 501c3 nonprofit agency. They lead community efforts to develop long range plans to improve the Wabash riverfront, the river corridor, and water quality; and then engage the community in implementation.

The Hoosier Environmental Council: The voice of the people for 30 years. The eyes and ears of everyone in Indiana who is concerned about the environment, and everyone who should be. The Hoosier Environmental Council is Indiana’s leading educator and advocate for environmental issues and policies.

Indiana Organic Gardeners Association: IOGA is a diverse group of backyard and market gardeners who use ecologically savvy methods to grow safe food and naturally beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs. Their goal is to educate about the reasons for and methods of environmentally friendly gardening, and to encourage the reduction of chemical dependency in gardens, lawns and farms.

The Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter: The Indiana/Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club was founded in 1975. John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club and "Father of our National Parks," lived in Indiana from the spring of 1866 through June, 1867.  He worked at a carriage-parts factory, and spent what little free time he had exploring the nearby forests for their botanical treasures. In 2004, the Indiana Chapter of the Sierra Club had a State Historical Marker erected in Indianapolis in memory of John Muir, and continues to honor Muir's legacy by working to protect the environment for all Hoosiers.  From community issues and action, to lobbying on a state and national level, the Club works to take effective action where it's needed most.

NICHES protects, restores and sustains Northern Indiana’s ecosystems by providing habitat for native species and offering natural places for the education, appreciation and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Wheels For Wishes is a car donation program benefiting Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. They are proud to offer an easy way to recycle or donate unwanted cars, trucks, motorcycles, SUVs, RVs, or even boats, by turning them into a wish for a local child.
