The Student Information System (SIS) is an integrated computer system that supports admissions, recruiting, registration, academic scheduling, event scheduling, academic history, academic monitoring, financial aid, and billing receivables. So far, two major components have been developed in SIS: Student Contact and Student Services Information on the Web (SSINFO). As the initiative unfolds, there will be three unique ways to access SIS: 1) online through an application on the client's pc; 2) online through a web browser using the Internet; and 3) through query, a method of requesting information from the system in a report format.

February 2002 Activities:

 
    SIS Student Contact Rollout:  
  • Roll out the University student recruitment strategy and train staff to use the student contact component of SIS in the School of Management.
February 2002 (R02.02) will include the following functionalities:
   SIS Upgrades:  
  • Folder tab descriptions - Complete implementation of existing feature (Tab Preferences). Utilizes the descriptions provided by the business analysts.
  • Wheel mouse support - Infrastructure feature (developers use it).
  • Cascading window support - Infrastructure feature (developers use it).
  • DPE processors should send startup errors to system message log - bug fix
  • Fix description of art criteria - bug fix
  • Add standard reporting and progress reporting to the File Converter framework. - infrastructure requirements. Will allow conversion team to better gauge progress.
  • Add a link within SSINFO. Link for the "Additional Financial Aid Information" document will be handled. (It is not necessary to wait for a release to be issued.)
  • Create administrative interfaces for student assignee requests and grants - Completes implementation of e-Payment.
  • Somehow indicate contacts with multiple details in the contact table view.
  • Security enhancements - Internal Audit requirement
    Lock account for 15 minutes after 3 failed login attempts.
   Master Schedule Construction Phase I Project:  
  • Department abbreviations - Supports Event Management.
  • Rename the SIS menu item "Event Management" to "Recruitment Events" in preparation for February Event Management release - Supports Event Management implementation.
  • Campus address support - Supports Event Management
  • Long name added to instructional type - Supports Event Management
   Academic History and Monitoring Project:  
  • Course Catalog on the Web - Provides for the public display of course catalog information. While implemented, this feature won't be turned on until March or May to give Registrar time to review and approve the data.
  • Calendar Entry refinements - Supports Course Management as well as event and recruitment management.
  • Calendar Entry roll forward - Supports Course Management as well as event and recruitment management.

March 2002 Activities:

March 2002 (Release R02.03) will include the following functionalities:
 

 Master Schedule Construction Phase I Project:

 
  • Event Management.
  • Re-implement course time definitions (ex:  define evening course) - Supports implementation of Event Management.
   Academic History and Monitoring Project:  
  • Change transcript requests to use an address object for better validation - infrastructure requirement.
  • Convert ECN course offering information to SIS. Supports Course Management.
   SIS Upgrades:  
  • Generate transaction documentation from objects to free developers - infrastructure requirement.
  • Financial Aid Missing Information Letters.
  • Add "I'm not coming" functionality to fee pages in SSINFO.
April 2002 Activities:
   SIS Student Contact Rollout:  
  • Roll out the University student recruitment strategy and train staff to use the student contact component of SIS in the Undergraduate Studies Program.

May 2002 Release (R02.05) will include the following functionalities:

   Master Schedule Construction Phase I Project:  
  • Event Management.
  • University Schedule of Classes on the Web.
    Part of Event Management. Supports the public display of the University's course schedule. The mainframe will still be the authoritative source.
   Student Information Query (SIQ) Refinement  
  • Transform objects for SIQ
   SIS Upgrades:  
  • Add to SSINFO, via the password maintenance screen, the ability to display the career account ID for those who have career accounts. In addition, enhance the SSINFO interface with the system that manages career accounts (ACMAINT) such that a student's request to synchronize passwords from their career account is accepted and the appropriate action taken on the SSINFO side.
June 2002 Activities:
   SIS Student Contact Rollout:  
  • Roll out the University student recruitment strategy and train staff to use the student contact component of SIS in the Freshman Engineering.
   Student Information Query (SIQ) Refinement  
    • Implement 5 of the 13 redesigned data models in the Student Information Query database.
July 2002 Release (R02.07) will include the following functionalities:
   Master Schedule Construction Phase I Project:  
    • Enhancements to Event Management
    • First and Last Effective Dates will be added to Internal Organization Role. An Internal Organization Role defines the type of organization internal to Purdue, for example department, school, and residence.
   Academic History and Monitoring Project:  
    • Course rosters will be available for viewing and download via the web. Security will be in place to ensure this information is released to the appropriate individuals. From a technical standpoint, the course roster functionality will use I2A2 authentication services.
   SIS Upgrades:  
    • A process to automatically disable inactive accounts and to terminate accounts that have never been used will be automated. This process does not impact students' use of SSINFO. It applies only to Purdue staff accounts.
    • Users will be able to refer to the help pages on the SIS Training and Support website from the SIS client on their desktop via F1 key on the keyboard.
    • The annual percentage rate that applies to the installment billing will be displayed on the appropriate billing pages in SSINFO. This probably will be required prior to the official July release. If so, only this feature will be implemented sooner.
    • Provide a mechanism for Bursar staff to view the pending $0 confirmation transactions. This will enable staff to prevent cancellation for those students who confirm the morning of the cancellation run.
December 2002 Activities:
   SIS Student Contact Rollout:  
    • Roll out the University student recruitment strategy and train staff to use the student contact component of SIS in the next identified school.
February 2003 Activities:
   SIS Student Contact Rollout:  
    • Roll out the University student recruitment strategy and train staff to use the student contact component of SIS in the next identified school.
March 2003 Release (R03.03) will include the following functionalities:
   Master Schedule Construction Phase I Project:  
    • Construct University schedule of classes.
      SIS becomes the authoritative source for course offerings. Effects Space Management and Academic Scheduling staff. Will be able to construct the University class schedule for the summer of 03 in SIS.
    • Web-based special event scheduling.
    • Implement employee to venue relationships (who is using what space) - Supports Event Management.
    • Implement Researcher space utilization - Supports Event Management.
    • Ability to store binary list objects (BLOBs) and link to them from web pages and the client. Infrastructure feature for Venue management (PDFs could be used to display building/room layout.)
    • Many-to-many relations support - infrastructure requirement to support Event Management.
    • Reference tables with categories will allow duplicates across categories - infrastructure requirement to support Event Management.
    • Integrate recruitment event system in the event management. Completes Event Management. Master Schedule construction phase 1 is considered complete
    • Schedule deputies can update course offerings.
    • Foundation for support of automatic construction of the schedule of classes. This provides the foundation for Master Schedule Construction Phase 2. This supports the vision that source for building the University's master schedule will use student plan of study and faculty availability.
   Academic History and Monitoring Project:  
    • Academic History repository.
    • Academic History transcript generation.
    • Academic History certification processing.
    • Academic History transcript / certification request handling.
    • Instructors can update course additional info.
    • Restricted record refinement.
   SIS Upgrades:  
    • Full audit trail functionality.
    • Customer-based security and I2A2/PUID integration.
      Allow students who request transcripts via SSINFO to modify the request up until they are processed - Small request (filler work)
    • Generic sort on any column in the table views - Small request (filler work
    • Help system for the SIS client (does not necessarily include the content).
    • Enhancements to keyword search framework and integration into systems (e.g. course management) - Complete implementation of an existing feature.
    • Better down time support for the VisualWave servers - infrastructure requirement.
    • Add a true client for the system message log service with "queue and send" functionality - infrastructure requirement.
    • Upgrade development tool to VW 5i.4 - infrastructure requirement.
    • Change SSINFO transcript requests so they are not deleted, just marked processed and create a purger - infrastructure requirement.
    • Change best test score records so they are not deleted, just marked processed and create a purger - infrastructure requirement.

Future Projects

Subsequent to the releases planned through 2003, additional projects are planned: Student Registration and Scheduling, Master Schedule Construction Phase II, Transfer Credit Articulation, Admissions, Student Billing and Payments, and Financial Aid.

While every effort will be made to meet the above timeline, the content or timing of each release is subject to change due to the continuous reassessment of priorities and objectives. Visit the TRAX web site (no longer available) for continuous updates.
