STEAM-CIRT Summary & Trends for July 2007

July 2007 Summary and Trends

The STEAM-CIRT experienced a moderate increase in the total number of events reported in July while the volume of classified IT incidents increased sharply since June.  Compared to the same month last year, classified IT incidents have more than doubled.   This rise in incident numbers can be attributed to the surge of storm worm activity seen around the Internet as well as enhancements in IRC Bot and storm worm detection capabilities within the STEAM-CIRT.  As the Fall Semester begins and a large number of students return to campus, the STEAM-CIRT predicts that the number of incidents will rise further.
