What is a computer patch?

A patch is a piece of software that can be an upgrade, a bug fix, or an update to address new issues such as security problems.   Patches are available for many types of software, including operating systems.  If you are using Microsoft Windows as your operating system, you can learn more about available patches at www.windowsupdate.com.

How do I download Microsoft patches to burn to a CD in Windows XP?

In Windows XP, open Windows Update.

1.      Select the "Administrator Options" menu item in the left menu bar.

2.      Select "Windows Update Catalog" from the top line of the "Administrator Options" page.

3.      Once you've selected "Windows Update Catalog" a new page will open.

4.      Select "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems."

5.       Select your OS and patches from those that the search returns.

6.      Select the patch type you want.

7.       Select the patches you want and click "add" to add each one.

8.      Select your download location, then download the patches. You can now burn them to CD.

A warning about this process: installing patches out of chronological order can cause problems.
