What is abuse@purdue.edu and what information should I include in a message to abuse@purdue.edu?

Reports of abuse or misuse of Purdue’s information technology resources should be made to abuse@purdue.edu.  All reports of abuse or misuse should contain a brief explanation of why you are sending the mail and must include the suspected Purdue IP address. Actual activity logs with IP addresses (source and destination), ports (source and destination) and accurate times are most helpful.

If you are reporting inappropriate or objectionable e-mail, or SPAM email, please forward the e-mail, including full headers with your report.  To learn how to include header information, please see http://www.itap.purdue.edu/email/help/detail.cfm?KBID=1308.

If you are reporting what you believe is criminal activity, do not delete the mail from your computer until you have contacted your local police and have been instructed to do so. (Note that you must make a report to the local police; ITaP personnel can not do that for you.) If you receive a threatening e-mail, contact the local police immediately.

I think someone has broken into my account. (My files are missing or changed or there are files there that I did not create.) What should I do?

The unauthorized use of computer accounts is a violation of University policy and it may also be a violation of Indiana law. If you know or suspect that someone else is using your account, you should:

1.      Contact the Purdue Police and file a report.  For more information see:  http://www.purdue.edu/securepurdue/report.cfm

2.      Change your password immediately.  (See above FAQ regarding changing your password.)
