.DAT files are the virus definitions that allow the Anti-virus software to detect viruses.  When new viruses are discovered, the anti-virus program must be updated with new .DAT files that are enabled to remove the newly discovered viruses. 

To obtain the latest McAfee .DAT files, go to https://www.purdue.edu/securepurdue/login/?location=/securepurdue/download/index.cfm&urlparam=, login and click on ".DAT files" (on the left hand toolbar).
