National Cybersecurity Awareness Month helps raise awareness about online security and safety, protection of personal digital information, and the nation’s critical cyber infrastructure. It has taken place every October since 2001. This is the seventh year that Purdue University and ITaP Security and Policy has observed the month-long campaign.

On October 5, 2012, ITaP Security and Policy will offer the following presentations. The presentations are free and open to the public.

Morning General Sessions (Stewart Center, Rooms 214 A-B, C-D):

  • 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Keynote address by Eugene Spafford, Executive Director of CERIAS
  • 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. "Security Perspectives 2012" David Shaw, chief information security officer for IT Security and Policy
  • 11:25 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. “The Promise and Peril of Social Networking” Panel discussion with Kyle Bowen, Director of Informatics at ITaP, Eugene Spafford, Executive Director of CERIAS, Professor of Computer Science, David Shaw, CISO at ITaP, and Lorraine Kisselburgh, Assistant Professor, Brian Lamb School of Communication.

Afternoon Sessions:
The tracks split for the afternoon, offering three sessions per track.

Security Awareness track: (STEW 214 C-D)

  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. — Social Networking Security and Privacy (Keith Watson of the Center for Education and Research, Information Assurance and Security, CERIAS)
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m. — Minimum Security Requirements for Handling Data in Research Projects: Peter Dunn, Associate Vice President of Research, Joan Vaughan, Director of HIPAA, Student Health Center,  Gregory Barnes, IT Security Risk Analyst
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m. — Tips on Securing Mobile Devices (Mike Hill, Project Manager Systems Analyst, Center for Environmental Regulatory Information Systems and Preston Wiley, Network Security Manager of the Center for Environmental Regulatory Information System)
