Beware of Facebook scams, malware in apps

Published in Handler's Log | Posted by Anthony Paladino on November 05, 2009

Users of Facebook should be wary about the apps that they install and the ads and messages that they click. Two recent reports link popular apps to some rather dubious scams.

Players of the popular Facebook games Farmville and Mafia wars have been targeted by ads and e-mails asking players to particpate in online surveys or quizzes in exchange for in-game credits. At the end of the survey, users are asked to enter their mobile numbers. Unwittingly, they have subscribed themselves to a $10 per month charge. Users of the Facebook app Honesty Box should be aware there is another app called the Honesty Box Reader which purports to be able to read the secret content of other users Honesty Boxes. In fact, this app installs a keylogger or trojan on a user's machine, compromising the system and opening them up to a bevy of potential attacks or possible identity theft. This app should be avoided at all costs. See the full story at http://blog.spywareguide.com/2009/11/the-facebook-dishonesty-box.html
