SUMMER CAMPS, WORKSHOPS and INTERNSHIPS "Digging in"
The Wea View Schoolhouse may have closed in 1916, but the surrounding grounds yielded learning opportunities for Science Bound students nearly a century later. As part of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology's summer archaeological field school, 17 Science Bound students dug and dusted alongside professors and students. They searched for relics of our past and uncovered potential careers as well. The dig was one of several field opportunities for the Science Bound Learn and Earn program, which offered a stipend in exchange for in-depth career exploration. The hard work seemed to pay off as well - 67 percent of Learn and Earn participants increased their grade point averages the following semester.
As Science Bound students complete the Summer Biology camp Experience selective students who have mastered the material are invited back to serve as interns where they teach the concepts or to conduct research in the area. The Biology camp has proven to be a valuable jewel in helping students learn about academic opportunities.
During the summer following their junior year, Science Bound students participate in either an industrial or academic internship. Companies like Rolls-Royce, Bowen Engineering, Shiel Sexton, L'Acquis Consulting and Applied Engineering provide practical hands on experience working with a scientist or engineer. Academic internships engage students in research in their area of interest at Purdue.
Whether through a magnifying glass, a microscope, or a telescope, each participant discovers a world of possibilities awaiting him or her.
Students participating in internships will be given the opportunity to perform research with one of the Purdue professor on campus, or to work and one of the volunteering businesses. The types of internships that are available each year depend upon the students interests and the availability of professors and companies. Previous internships have included companies such as Bowen Engineering, as well as research in the fields of Aeronautics, veterinary medicine, and microbiology.
