Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) had 4933 new students (first year and transfers) participating. This included nearly 70.63% of the First Year population (excluding 230 transfer students). BGR participants consistently have significantly higher retention rates than non-participants, and this is especially true for participating women and underrepresented minorities. More importantly, BGR participants tend to graduate at a higher rate than their non-participating peers.
The Common Reading selection for 2011-12, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, was distributed to Purdue’s incoming new students in conjunction with the STAR program. Additionally, the New York Times Bestselling author, Rebecca Skloot, addressed the new undergraduate class at a convocation held on August 21, 2011.
This fall, 63 learning communities have a total participation of 1663 students, or 24.97% of the 1st year class. This is the highest participation rate for students in Learning Communities since its inception. Learning Community participants, including women and underrepresented minorities, consistently have significantly higher retention rates than non-participants. More importantly, Learning Community participants tend to graduate at a higher rate than their non-participating peers. Learning Community offerings will be expanded in academic year 12-13; the second straight year of expansion.
Purdue Promise is the intentional connection of four years of meeting financial need through grant and work-study funds and providing academic and personal support for Twenty-first Century Scholars (TfCS) with an annual family income of less than $40,000. Of the first cohort of 171 Purdue Promise students who entered in 2009, 82% were retained, significantly higher than for non-participating TfCS and non-TfCS Pell grant recipients from the same income profile. An additional 250 students, 37% of whom are underrepresented minorities, were added to the Purdue Promise scholarship and support program this fall.
The Summer Transition, Advising and Registration Program (STAR) was held June 20 – July 14, 2011. 5704 new students and an estimated 12,000 family members and guests attended one of the 18 STAR dates during this program. Click here to get more information about STAR 2012.
Purdue launched Supplemental Instruction (SI), a proven form of peer-led academic assistance, for fall 2011. A Task Force identified 11 challenging, high population courses to be supplemented by this form of assistance. 22 high-performing students were then selected and trained to serve as SI Leaders. These students will attend lectures, interact with faculty, develop lesson plans and lead SI sessions outside of class to aid students in these classes.
You’ll receive a warm welcome during our orientation program for new and transfer undergraduate students who start at Purdue for the first time in the spring term. During Winter Welcome, students sit down with their academic advisor and explore course options. Create — or fine-tune — schedules. It’s a great opportunity to take advance credit or placement tests. And the best part is you’ll get a feel of campus life and what’s it means to be a Boilermaker.
