Soon your student may start using words and terms that are strange to you. The following list provides some of the phrases frequently used at Purdue. We hope this will help you and your new student speak the same language!

AAO: Affirmative Action Office, part of the Office of Institutional Equity, located on the 10th floor of Young Hall.


BCC: Black Cultural Center. The BCC provides purposeful, holistic, scholarly, and co-curricular programming designed to enhance the understanding of African American heritage.

BGR: Boiler Gold Rush, the largest first-year orientation program at Purdue.

Blackboard Vista: An e-learning system supported by ITaP for teachers to post specific information for each class. It is accessible through a student's career account.

BRNG: Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education. Formerly known as LAEB, it is home to the colleges of Liberal Arts and Education.

 
Callout: A general meeting sponsored by a student club or organization to attract new members. Students attend callouts to find out about a group they might want to join.

CAPP: Curriculum and Advising Program Planning. This is an audit that matches courses completed with courses required for your student's degree program. Your student will be able to view/print via the myPurdue student portal.

CCO: Center Career for Opportunities. The CCO is a place where students can learn about career options and get help searching for a job or internship.

CODO: Change of degree objective. Changing from one academic college/school or program into another. Students must come to the Office of the Registrar to begin the process.

Co-oping: Participating in Purdue's cooperative education program. Co-op students alternate semesters of study with semesters of work in an area related to their major. Students gain experience, which helps them find a job after college, and earn money, which helps with college expenses. Students should see their academic advisors for information.

Co-op Housing: Housing units for students who save money by managing aspects of house operation such as meal planning or maintenance and improvements.

 
DLC: The Digital Learning Collaboratory, located in the Hicks Undergraduate Library. It is a state-of-the-art multimedia development facility, staffed to support integrated learning of information and technology literacy. It is a joint initiative of Libraries and Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP).

DRO: Diversity Resource Office, located on the 10th floor of Young Hall.

Drop/Add: To drop or add classes from a student's schedule. Students may drop or add via the myPurdue portal or with the Office of Registrar, depending upon what week it is in the semester.

EE (pronounced "double e"): A common name for the Electrical Engineering Building.

ENAD (pronounced "e-nad"): A common name for the Engineering Administration Building.

Exponent, The: The independent newspaper published by Purdue students and distributed free at many campus locations.

 
HICKS: A common name for the Hicks Undergraduate Library, also the home of the Digital Learning Collaboratory (DLC).

HSSE (pronounced "hiss-e"): A common name for the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library located in Stewart Center.

 
ITaP (pronounced "eye-tap"): Information Technology at Purdue. The organization provides computing resources, services, and user support to meet the University's research, academic, and administration needs. ITaP provides and maintains more than 60 computer laboratories, basic phone services, and wireless connectivity throughout campus.

LCC:  Latino Cultural Center. It celebrates and enriches the Latino cultural experience at Purdue, serving students, faculty/staff, alumni, and community members.  The LCC is located at 600 N. Russell St.o

 
Mortar Board: A planner, published each fall by the Mortar Board honor society, listing important Purdue events, holidays, library hours, etc. It is sold at most stores near campus.

MSEE (pronounced "m-s, double e"): A common name for the Materials and Electrical Engineering building.

myPurdue: Purdue's online resource for students.  Students log in to myPurdue to register for coursework, review and approve financial aid awards, request transcripts, and a multitude of other things.

 
PUSH: A common name for the Purdue University Student Health Center.

 
RSC: Nickname for the Recreational Sports Center, which offers gymnasium facilities to students and staff.

 
SATS: Student Access, Transition and Success Programs department runs an array of support and mentor programs that help students prepare for and succeed in Purdue's rigorous academic environment. SATS programs include Boiler Gold Rush, Learning Communities, the Purdue Promise program, Student Transition, Advising and Registration (STAR), and support for Twenty-first Century Scholars.

STAR: Student Transition, Advising and Registration: A one day program for new undergraduate students to recieve academic advice and creat their initial course schedules.  All domestic students are required to attend STAR.  International students can register for coursework without coming to campus by working with their advising offices.

 
TA: A teaching assistant. TAs are graduate or undergraduate students who instruct classes or assist professors with classes.

 
Web Mail: The student e-mail service used by Purdue University.

WRO: Women's Resource Office, located on the 10th floor of Young Hall.
