The Purdue Chapter of the Society of Sigma Xi annually presents a High School
Science/Mathematics Teacher Award. This Award is given to an Indiana high school teacher in
the geographic area encompassed by the regional science fair held at Purdue
University. The awards will be presented at the Sigma Xi banquet on Wednesday, April 18, 2007.
Nominations are now open for the 2006-2007 High School Science / Mathematics Teacher Award. Nominations should
include the following:
- A completed Nomination Form
- A curriculum vitae of the candidate
- Four letters of recommendation
- Copies of publications and/or teaching materials relevant to the nominee’s teaching activities
In preparing the nomination, the committee recommends that those writing supporting
letters to be asked to concentrate on the following criteria:
- The teacher is recognized by colleagues and students for his or her expertise in science and mathematics teaching.
- The teacher is genuinely interested in the high school student’s academic and personal welfare.
- The teacher motivates pupils to pursue interest in science as evidenced by encouraging and assisting students who participate in the regional science fair and/or influencing pupils to choose careers in professional areas that rely heavily upon a strong academic core in science and mathematics.
- The teacher actively continues to increase his or her knowledge in science through participation in professional societies, refresher courses during the summer, professional writing, etc.
- The teacher serves as spokesperson for science in the community, e.g., involvement with junior high school students, other teachers in the school system, Chamber of Commerce, 4-H programs, or scouting activities.
