FACULTY POSITION IN ACOUSTICS AND HEARING IN THE SCHOOLS OF BIOMEDICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY

The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University are inviting applications for a tenured faculty position at the Full or Associate Professor levels in the broad areas of Acoustics, Hearing or Speech.  We are seeking a highly qualified, creative individual with substantial research experience and an interest in teaching.  The successful candidate will be expected to foster growth in interdisciplinary Acoustics through the newly established PHASE initiative at Purdue University.

PHASE (Purdue Hearing and Acoustics in Science and Engineering) is an interdisciplinary community of approximately 50 faculty members from across 16 departments at Purdue University’s West Lafayette Campus and the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis (www.purdue.edu/research/phase/).  The mission of PHASE is to nurture a vital and collaborative interdisciplinary community of faculty and students engaged in hearing and acoustics research and clinical practice.  It is the vision of PHASE to promote and maintain ongoing funded interdisciplinary basic science and applied research projects among its members.  It is expected that the successful candidate will assume a leadership role to help strategically guide the development of PHASE into a self-sustaining research center and graduate program.

Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree and a distinguished background that includes depth in both engineering and life sciences.  The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach biomedical or mechanical engineering courses and maintain a strong, externally-funded research program.  The successful candidate will be tenured either in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering or the School of Mechanical Engineering as appropriate.  Formal affiliations with other Schools within the University will also be possible.

Applicants should submit a detailed resume, a description of teaching and research plans, copies of selected publications and a list of four professional references to Professor George R. Wodicka  (c/o Dianna Livingston, livingdl@purdue.edu), Head, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, 206 South Intramural Drive, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, 47907-2032.  Applicants for the position are also asked to include in their letter of interest a description of their approach to the leadership expectation for the development of PHASE into a self-sustaining research and graduate program.

Screening of candidates will begin on March 30, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled.  Purdue University is an equal opportunity/equal access/affirmative action employer fully committed to achieving a diverse workforce.
