PHASE Mission Statement

Acoustics is the science of sound, including its generation, propagation and effects. Hearing science concerns the perceptual detection of sound and extends to understanding the basis of language communication and its disorders in humans.

Purdue University research in hearing and acoustics can be subdivided into the 5 broad categories of biomedical acoustics, engineering acoustics and noise control, physical acoustics and wave propagation, speech and hearing sciences and, acoustics in arts.

PHASE (Purdue Hearing & Acoustics in Science & Engineering) is an interdisciplinary community of approximately 50 faculty from across 16 departments at Purdue University's West Lafayette Campus and the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. The mission of PHASE is to create a vital and collaborative interdisciplinary community of faculty and students engaged in hearing and acoustics research and clinical practice. It is the vision of PHASE to promote and maintain ongoing funded interdisciplinary basic science and applied research projects among its members. Faculty research, formal coursework and a seminar series support an interdisciplinary learning environment that is accessible to interested graduate students from a variety of majors.
