Bycombining models and data, the performance and integrity of systems can be predicted and the uncertainties in those predictions can be quantified. Examples of research in predictive methods for a range of engineered systems include the following:

-Prediction of strain distribution in metal-to-metal adhesive joints for studying the propagation of cracks

-Derivation of prognosis models for predicting growth of fatigue cracks in components in real-time based on system-level inertial measurements

-Intelligent prognosis and design of maintenance systems for critical infrastructure consisting of water, roadway, and power systems

-Decentralized estimation/prediction/control of large-scale networked systems using ad-hoc sensor networks
