SEMINAR: "Advanced Thermoelectric Materials for Addressing Grand Challenges: Global Energy and Therm

Abstract: Energy, water and food supplies are some of the grand challenges facing humanity.  While energy is arguably the greatest grand challenge since solving the energy problem will help alleviate many of the other problems, energy also represents perhaps one of the greatest opportunities for technological innovation, entrepreneurial success, and beneficial advancements for civilization and the environment.  This talk will discuss the energy situation, including the nature and magnitude of the problems, and outline some solutions already being implemented to address the energy problems.  The importance of thermal management as a grand technological challenge will also be discussed.  In particular, key features of thermal management relative to some of the broader energy issues will be noted.  The focus will then narrow to advanced thermoelectric materials and unconventional applications.  Rather than the more common pessimistic tenor, the outlook presented will be upbeat and positive.

Bio: Dr. Dudis is a Principal Research Chemist in the Air Force Research Laboratory – Materials and Manufacturing Directorate.  He is widely recognized as an expert in electronically conductive polymers, semicondcutive macromolecular materials, and nonlinear optical materials.  His award winning work has been published in over 100 publications, and Dr. Dudis has given over 200 technical seminars and presentations nationally and internationally.  He has served as the Research Leader for the Polymer Core Technology Area, and in that capacity had oversight of up to 60 researchers and a multi-million dollar budget.  In addition to his work in developing new materials for photovoltaic, battery and fuel cell applications, he served as technology transition lead to facilitate commercialization of materials technologies for power and energy applications.  Recently his research endeavors have focused on new materials for thermoelectric energy harvesting and thermal energy storage, but maintains strong interest in batteries, fuel cells, and photovoltaics.  He has spoken widely to audiences on energy and societal issues.  Additionally, he recently organized and teaches the Alternative Energy Sources course at Sinclair Community College, and is working with Sinclair to develop a sustainable energy education program.  Dr. Dudis holds a bachelor degree from the University of Dayton, a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University and was a research associate at Texas A&M University, a post-doctoral fellow at Iowa State University – DOE Ames National Laboratory, served on the faculty of the US Naval Academy (Annapolis), was a visiting scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory (in the J. Karle group), and was a guest scientist at the University of Mons (Belgium).
