Description

Thin films, surfaces, and coatings: Nano-features for macro-applications

Many material systems and related technologies rely on surfaces or interfaces that perform a critical function without affecting the bulk properties of the nearby materials.  For example, sun-facing photovoltaic module materials must be highly transparent and durable to sunlight, moisture, and other environmental stresses.  While certain fluoropolymer films provide these bulk properties, it will be shown how surface engineering is necessary to create a system with environmentally durable adhesion.  Other examples will also be covered in which polymer surfaces are modified to provide enhanced function, with an emphasis on manufacturable technologies.
