Purdue University has changed to the newest type of radiation dosimeter.  The new dosimeters called Luxel, are supplied by Landauer. Luxel's optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeter measures radiation exposure due to x-ray, beta, and gamma radiation through a thin layer of aluminum oxide.  After use, the aluminum oxide is stimulated with a laser to become luminescent in proportion to the amount of radiation exposure.

The new dosimeters have several advantages:

  • more durable
  • water resistant
  • more sensitive, doses possible down to 1 mrem
  • more accurate

Some changes include:

*****Dosimetry will be delivered on a bimonthly basis.*****

Retain the holder for future use.  When your new dosimeter arrives, snap out the dosimeter portion and return it to REM via campus mail in the small plastic bags provided.  For ring badges, please return the whole ring when you receive your new one.
