Learn to Swim-Youth Level Information

* Students must demonstrate competency in all skills presented before advancing to the next level.

Parent & Child Aquatics

Designed to introduce young children 6-36 months of age to the water and prepare them to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. The course gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to the water. It is a bonding experience that will fill the parents and children with wonderful lifelong memories.

Course pre-requisite: Children must be at least 6 months of age. No swim skills necessary.

Exit skills requirements: Must meet age requirements for Preschool Aquatics.

Preschool Aquatics

Designed to promote the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills for children 3-5 years of age. Skills are grouped into categories such as water entry and exit, breath control and submersion, swim on front and back, changing direction, and water safety.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements. No swim skills necessary.

Exit skills requirements: Must meet age requirements for youth lessons & demonstrate competency completing course objectives at the discretion of a learn-to-swim instructor.

Youth Level 1

Designed to introduce those who are just starting off in the water to introductory skills such as: submerging face, blowing bubbles, assisted floats, and water safety, and basic swim technique. All skills performed with the assistance of an instructor. Designed for participants 5 years of age or older.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements. No swim skills necessary.

Exit skills requirements: Must demonstrate competency completing the course objectives with the assistance of the instructor. Students must be comfortable fully submerging the mouth, nose, eyes, ears, and head prior to exiting this level. 

Youth Level 2

Designed for those who can fully submerge face, blow bubbles, and do assisted floats. Students will learn introductory skills such as kicking, floating and underwater exploration. Goals include helping children gain greater independence performing basic swimming skills. Designed for participants 5 years of age or older.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements and pass level 1 exit skills test.

Exit skills requirements: Must demonstrate competency to complete the course objectives without assistance from an instructor. Students exiting level 2 for level 3 must effectively pass exit skills testing, swim independently, and demonstrate the muscular endurance & maturity necessary to begin stroke development.

Youth Level 3

Designed to build on and practice Level 2 skills. Skills taught include coordinating front crawl and back crawl, introduction to elementary backstroke, introduction to treading, retrieving objects, and introduction to diving. Designed for participants 5 years of age or older.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements, successfully pass level 2 exit skills tests, swim independently, and demonstrate the muscular endurance & maturity necessary to begin stroke development.

Exit skills requirements: Must demonstraate competency in level 3 skills, perform strokes at level 3 quality/proficiency, and pass exit skills tests. 

Youth Level 4

Designed to develop confidence and endurance in the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and existing skills. Skills taught include standing dive, deep-water skills, introduction to breast stroke, sidestroke, treading water (scissors kick, rotary kick.) Designed for participants 5 years of age or older.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements and successfully pass level 3 stroke performance exit skills tests.

Exit skills requirements: Must demonstrate competency in level 4 skills, perform strokes to level 4 quality/proficiency, and pass level 4 exit skills tests. 

Youth Level 5

Designed to coordinate and refine the key strokes. Skills taught include underwater swimming, diving, breast stroke, and sidestroke, introduction to butterfly, dolphin kick, feet-first surface dives, and open turns. Designed for participants 5 years of age or older.

Course pre-requisite: Must meet age requirements and successfully pass level 4 stroke performance exit skills tests.

Exit skills requirements: Must demonstrate competency in level 5 skills, perform strokes to level 5 quality/proficiency, and pass level 5 exit skills tests.
