Instructional Workshops
We offer several different learning opportunities for climbers of all experience levels.
All DRS members age 16 and over are eligible to participate in any of our workshops. To register for any of our Instructional Workshops, please visit the Climbing Wall office during staffed hours. You must register for a workshop 24 hours ahead of time. Any workshop may be cancelled due to a lack of participation.
Top-Rope Belaying
Every Monday, May 13–August 15

Monday, 5:30pm–8:30pm
This workshop will teach participants the essential skills to climb and belay including, but not limited to: climbing technique and terminology, equipment inspection and usage, proper knot tying, safety commands, and belay technique. Participants are first shown these techniques and then allowed to practice under the supervision of an instructor. Participants must complete the Top-Rope Belay Workshop and wait at least 24 hours before taking the associated competency exam.

Lead Climbing and Belaying
Only Tuesdays: May 21, June 18, July 9, July 30

Tuesdays, 5:30pm–8:30pm.
The workshop instructs participants in the techniques of lead climbing and belaying specific to indoor climbing. Participants must have already passed a top-rope belay competency exam at the Climbing Gym before participating in this class. Additionally, participants must be able to climb comfortably and without falling at or above the YDS grade of 5.9 before participating. Participants must complete the Lead Climbing and Belay Workshop and wait at least 24 hours before taking the associated competency exam.
