Notice of National Shortage of some Stimulant Medications

There is a national shortage of some generic and brand name stimulant medications which have been frequently prescribed for ADD/ADHD. This crisis is related to a shortage of raw materials used in manufacture and/or decreased manufacturers.

Some new FDA rulings about controlled prescriptions now make it illegal for a pharmacist to alter a prescription- even if to substitute to make an equivalent dosage

Helpful Tips:

  • Before going to your pharmacy to fill a prescription, call first to see if your medication is available.
    • If no availability, ask if there are any permissible substitutions.
  • If your medication is unavailable, ask if there are any known local pharmacies which still have the medication.
  • If no medication is available, plan ahead. Call to make an appointment with your prescribing provider so an alternate medication may be discussed.
  • Per federal and state laws, never share prescription medications with or receive prescription medications from other persons.
  • If you have not been seeing a PUSH provider for your care and prescriptions, and desire to do so, have your records sent from your current healthcare provider. PUSH providers will NOT prescribe without appropriate documentation. Walk-in care for prescription changes will not be available.
