Every week, SIAM@Purdue will post a difficult mathematical problem on the SIAM@Purdue website. Students at Purdue University can submit a solution to the problems each week through email or through our website. At the end of the semester, we will tally up all of the correct solutions and award first, second, and third prizes to the top three scoring students. With the prize winner's permission, we might post their names and short biographies on the SIAM website as well.

Our chapter would like to host a book drive through Better World Books that will specifically support Room to Read. (I have attached a description below)
--Room to Read has developed a natural approach to help children in the developing world gain the lifelong gift of education. Room to Read helps build schools, establish bilingual libraries, publish local language books, create computer labs, and even funds long-term scholarships. Since 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 1.7 million children.--
We would like to set out collection boxes in ten different locations around campus including:
We are planning on contacting the respective representatives in each location to ensure that we have permission to set out a collection box.
Also, we have a plan in place to check the boxes periodically to make sure they are not overflowing.

December 15 at 10:00 AM - December 22, 2013 at 5:00 PM
This winter break (December 15th-22rd, 2013), fourteen members of the Purdue University Caduceus Club and our Ecuadorian contact will travel to Otavalo, Ecuador to complete a medical outreach mission trip. The purpose of the trip will be to gain new cultural perspectives and experiences on how medicine is practiced in a foreign country, as well as hands on experience by providing basic medical services such as taking vitals and cleaning wounds. In addition to our partnership with San Luis de Otavalo, we will also be affiliating with local orphanages to spend time with the children. Medical supplies and clothing donations collected prior to the trip will be distributed to the understaffed and underfunded hospital and the homeless children of the orphanage respectively.
The experiences and knowledge gained by the trip participants about the Ecuadorian medical system and the importance of cultural and global awareness can be shared and benefit the aspiring health care providers of the Caduceus Club, the local community, family, and friends upon our return home to the United States. Each returning student will have life changing stories they are able to share with the peers here on campus. The Caduceus Club does medical outreach trips each year. Therefore a student going on this trip will run as the trip coordinator for next year. They will thus be responsible for choosing a country to visit, putting together and organizing a new group of students, and planning the mission activities abroad. Thus this one trip does not solely benefit these fourteen students and Otavalo, but has far outreaching effects to other students and possible communities in need. The Caduceus Club has established a program with great roots that will benefit many people to come.
