This trip will be an opportunity for 8 Purdue students to explore both good and bad development in the country of Haiti, with opportunities to listen, learn, and grow in understanding of the impact of businesses, schools, and education on small communities. This trip will be both educational and impactful for anyone, but especially for those considering global aid, micro-financing, and sustainable change. The attendees will learn the impact of small businesses in local community on a firsthand basis and lend a hand to help provide changes for the community at large. We will visit several organizations throughout the country to explore their approaches to development. We hope to leave a lasting impact on the students that will be participating in this trip, bringing greater understanding to what it looks like to live in distant countries and how they can create lasting, long-term change in our world.

Purdue Outing Club Adventure Race (POCAR)

January 14 at 9:30 AM - January 16, 2017 at 9:30 AM

The Purdue Outing Club Adventure Race (POCAR) is a major event the Outing Club puts on each year at one of the forests of Southern Indiana. This years event is at Yellowwood State Forest. It is an orienteering foot race during Martin Luther King weekend. Participants are allowed the use of maps and compasses to navigate during the race to find 25 - 35 checkpoints in the woods. In the past there have been racers from all over the US that come to compete. The 2017 race will be Saturday January 14th through Monday January 16th. The course is held within the boundaries of the forest and is about 30 - 40 miles, with participants traveling up to 50 miles on foot. Teams are made of 4 to 6 members who must complete the course of 25-35 checkpoints as quickly as possible. Throughout the race, teams must stay together and be safe. About 30 volunteers help man the race. They will leave the Friday before the race to set up for the event and camp at southern campsite of Yellowwood state park. Saturday through Monday they will be stationed at headquarters (The Picnic Shelter House south of Yellowwood lake), fire/water North or fire/water South which are located on each leg of the race. Volunteers at each of the stations will have a binder with all the name of the participants and will keep track of the times of each team. Volunteers at each of the checkpoints will also be looking out for signs of hypothermia and dehydration. There will be at least one if not two volunteers at each station that is CPR/First Aid certified. All volunteers will be briefed before the event about these conditions and there will be sheets in each of the binders with their symptoms. Volunteers will work in shifts to ensure they are not sleep deprived. Some volunteers will also be car patrols and will be driving around the course to check on racers and to pick up teams that want to drop out. In addition to the Outing Club volunteers, we have the IU ham radio club that will set up stations at each of the firewater stations and HQ. the fire/water stations and headquarters can use these to keep in contact and to request more water/volunteers/firewood. They can also inform headquarters of any issues if they do arise. We can also use the radio system to ensure that the teams have checked in and which teams have not. I am also working with BOSO/Norma to complete the special events permit.

Student organization leaders are invited to this social learning event where they can connect with other student organization leaders and compare ideas about topics related to leadership here on campus and more broadly. Each session will have a different topic and/or guest speaker to drive discussion. Light refreshments will be served.

Purdue Computing Showcase is an opportunity for students to connect with companies recruiting students studying within the computing disciplines at school.

Students can begin with a career fair and then interact with employers through a dinner and a hackathon where they can develop and "showcase" their skills to potential employers.

Black Tie Dinner Practices Dates

February 05, 2017 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Our annual Black Tie Dinner is a completely student run event that occurs on April 1, 2017 this year. Because of the nature, we need to train our volunteers how to participate in the 24 karat service style that this event is known for. We also need to train them on proper wine service and our culinary team needs proper kitchen and knife training. These volunteer practices occur once a week, on Sundays, so we can get all of our volunteers together at the same time to train them all as effectively and efficiently as possible.
