WGSS- Spring 2015- Masculinities

October 30 at 12:00 AM - November 28, 2014 at 12:00 AM

What does it mean to claim that there are multiple masculinities circulating and competing with one another in both the present day and throughout history? Where do we locate these masculinities-- in social practices, in bodies or in cultural representations from movies and television? What is the relationship between the study of men and masculinities and existing feminist projects? Ultimately, students from any discipline will find productive opportunities to apply the study of masculinity to work in their majors, while also learning how research is conducted in other fields.

Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies 499- Spring 2015- Women & War

October 30 at 12:00 AM - November 28, 2014 at 12:00 AM

This interdisciplinary course uses feminist analysis to examine the roles and representations of women in war-making and peace-building in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Although women have always been a part of war – as soldiers, nurses, mothers, gue-rilla fighters, military wives, sex workers, peace activists, and refu-gees – their experiences and participation are often marginalized or erased by media and history. Lecture and discussion will interrogate how intersections of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nationality inform women’s experiences of key institutions like the military and United Nations. Through a variety of texts, including literature, mem-oir, policy, and film, students will explore the ways in which war, mili-tarism, and peace-keeping are highly gendered and why women’s participation in matters of national and global security is crucial in the fight for human rights.
