Morton Community Center Rain Garden

March 01 at 12:00 PM - May 31, 2016 at 1:00 PM

BGI is planning the addition of a rain garden to the Morton Community Center. We hope to raise awareness in the community about stormwater management practices to encourage a sustainable mindset. Placed at the south-eastern side of the parking lot, this rain garden will help with the frequent problem of combined sewage overflow (CSO) into the Wabash River. Diverting rainwater from the city storm sewers will help reduce the amount of overflow events that dump stormwater and raw sewage into the Wabash. The rain garden will also reduce the chance of flooding on the Morton property itself because it will no longer collect near the street but instead in the rain garden. By filtering and allowing the rainwater to go back into the soil, the rain garden will prevent the runoff of polluted water into the Wabash as well.

Intro to Yes-For-School: healthy mind, body and life, spring 2016

April 07 at 2:45 PM - May 12, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Yesplus at Purdue received the community service grant in spring 2014 to conduct the 1st yes-for-school introductory project at PE classes in Central Catholic J-H School (C.C.). Nine Purdue students participated in this project. We received high positive feedbacks. We would like to apply this grant again to continue and extend the Intro of Yes-for-school, a social- emotional learning project to benefit more students.

The self-evaluated survey (48 students participated the anonymous survey we conducted at C.C. in 2015) indicates that calmness is the most obvious difference that students experienced. 93% of total students reported “feel at least 25% better in “I feel calm””. Then the order of other changes (showing at least 25% better) are I feel/ over all feelings (89%), My mood (74%), My stress (70%), My focus and concentration (65%), My anger and frustration (55%), and My sleep (46%). This above shown the positive impact in helping participant students in managing their emotions and mind toward calmer, focused, in- control and healthy way (please see the full report in this link http://bit.ly/1nBhG4Y

This spring 2016, we will integrate this project into an after-school program in Sunnyside intermediate school. The goal is

help students in 5th and 6th grade to experience effective mind-body tools to encourage a positive mental attitude and body. They will practice and learn breathing techniques, light stretch, practical life knowledge through playful yet interactive exercises to build up healthy mind, body and lifestyle.

Tree Removals for the City of Lafayette

April 18 at 8:00 AM - May 14, 2016 at 8:00 PM

Acting as the current President of the Purdue Student Society of Arboriculture it is my job to help the other members of the club to gain knowledge and hands on experience that will help them not only in the classrooms here at Purdue University, but gain an advantage in real world situations after graduation in the field of Urban Forestry.

In the recent month I have contacted a deal with the City of Lafayette to help them remove trees that are infested with emerald ash borer. This contract will last for the next 5 years and help raise money to attend national events associated with our organization. The following includes detail what our club will be helping the city with:

  • Removal of small ash trees (Less than 25 feet tall) along low traveled areas throughout the Lafayette community.
  • It will be low risk and very informative for underclassmen.
  • The removals will be led by our leader and Full-time professor at Purdue Lindsey Purcell. (also a certified arborist)
  • There will also be 3 highly trained seniors on the job site who all have over 3 years of Professional tree work experience. They will be in charge of making sure every student is preforming safe actions every step of the way.
  • Every student learning on the job site will be wearing full protective gear and will have basic knowledge to operate our equipment (chipper, chainsaw, etc.)
  • There will be a donation made from the City of Lafayette made out to the PSSA for our work and effort.
  • There is no a particular date scheduled for this event, it will happen in the dates from April 18th to May 14th in 2016.

Quran Conference

April 23 at 8:00 AM - May 23, 2016 at 6:00 PM

The Quran Conference will be an unprecedented event for the Purdue community to be able to learn about the Quran. The

conference will hopefully feature; featured talks, panel discussions, discussion, question and answer sessions, and an art display

featuring art from students.

The speakers at this event will be selected based on their knowledge of Quranic exegesis combined with their ability to connect with

a student audience. The speakers will come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and we hope to have a female speaker as

well as a part of the conference to speak specifically about the Quranic narrative on women and be available for questions.

The set-up will have main sessions in the morning followed by an afternoon of parallel sessions on a diverse range of topics. Also

office hours and group discussion will be in the afternoon to facilitate a more engaging learning experience for attendees. This

event will also give unique access to Purdue media to interact with participants as well as speakers.

The event will also feature an art display for attendees. Of the main highlights will be students Arabic calligraphy renditions of

Quranic verses; each piece of calligraphy will have the translation and also importance from the perspective of the student artist.

Additionally, the art display will hopefully include student art in poetry and photography.

Overall, the conference will allow for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to learn something new about one of the world’s most

influential texts in a relevant and exciting format.

For this reason, Sunshine has adopted a Listen-Learn-Serve model to their short-term mission trips. Each day we will have an opportunity to serve the community (at a local school), to listen to the stories of those who have been impacted by poverty in the community, and to learn, with nightly lessons taught by a member of Sunshine's staff.

Formula SAE Michigan Competition 2016

May 10 at 12:00 PM - May 15, 2016 at 1:00 PM

What is FSAE?
Formula SAE® is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). The first competition was started back in 1979 after Mark Marshek, then at University of Houston (Texas) contacted the SAE Educational Relations Department in 1978 to discuss adding a variant event of the Mini Baja; the name Mini Indy was founded. As many organizers have found, the work in building a car can be exceeded only by that to organize the event; 1980 failed to produce an organizer. Having seen the potential of the event, Mike Best, Robert Edwards and John Tellkamp, students at the University of Texas at Austin, approached Dr. Ron Matthews with an idea - how about another Mini-Indy, but with some changes? Make the rules more open; let it be as unlimited as possible. It was desired that this new competition would take the cars to the next level of engineering. The Baja competition was great for chassis design, but many students wanted to work on engines as well. The new rules would keep engine restrictions to a bare minimum. Any four-stroke engine was allowed for the first four years with power limited by a 25.4 mm intake restriction.

With grass roots support from his students, Dr. Ron Matthews contacted the SAE Educational Relations Department and set the wheels in motion. To differentiate this new event from the Mini-Indy, a new name was sought. To reflect better the road-racing nature of the event and its increased engineering content, the Formula SAE name was adopted.

The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.

Formula SAE promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Formula SAE takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences.

Today, the competition has expanded and includes a number of spin off events. In the United States there are two locations: California and Michigan; Michigan being the largest event and longest running.

NASA Robotic Mining Competition

May 14 at 9:00 AM - May 22, 2016 at 7:00 PM

Purdue Lunabotics spends the entire year working on building a robot to compete against 49 other teams across the nation in NASA's Robotic Mining Competition (RMC). The primary goal of the competition is to collect the most regolith (moon soil) in the amount of time permitted. Teams have points deducted for having a robot that weighs too much, draws too much power, or is outside of the size restrictions set by NASA. Additionally, the robot must only use mechanical devices that would be possible to operate in a low-gravity environment. The competition takes place at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Baja SAE California Competition

May 15 at 12:00 PM - May 27, 2016 at 10:00 PM

Event submission for competition registration fee reimbursement- more details will be submitted closer to competition date.

We will be competing with the car that we are building during the 2015-2016 school year. We will be competing against 99 other schools from around the world. The following description is taken from the SAE competition website, found here: http://students.sae.org/cds/bajasae/west/

"The object of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project that involves the design, planning and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Teams compete against one another to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to not only design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities.

All vehicles are powered by a ten-horsepower Intek Model 20 engine donated by Briggs & Stratton Corporation. For over twenty-five years, the generosity of Briggs & Stratton has enabled SAE to provide each team with a dependable engine free of charge. Use of the same engine by all the teams creates a more challenging engineering design test."

This opportunity in Haiti will allow 10 driven Purdue students to travel abroad to develop, learn and grow as both students and people. Taking a journey overseas to Port-au-Prince and Pignon, these students will be exposed to various cultures and backgrounds. The attendees will begin to understand the impact of small businesses in the local communities on a firsthand basis and be able to lend a hand to help provide sustainable changes for the community at large. These businesses include a micro-financing company, a local hospital, a teaching center providing educating to a variety of peoples, and additional small startup businesses that provide support to rural villages across Haiti. At the end of this trip, we wish to leave a lasting impact on the students in attendance that will allow them to understand the status quo of life in distant countries and how they can truly make a change for the betterment of all.
