The Lyceum: A Residential Learning Community in Shreve Hall for UHP Students

First-year students in the UHP have the opportunity to participate in The Lyceum, a residential learning community in Shreve Hall. As a member of The Lyceum, you will reside with other UHP students in the same residence, Shreve Hall. Doing so will provide you with the opportunity to make friends quickly with your fellow UHP students who also choose to take part in The Lyceum. The environment also will offer you plenty of opportunities for both formal and informal academic discussions. Faculty who are teaching courses associated with the UHP will use The Lyceum residence as a location for meetings and dialogue.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Lyceum

Do I have to live within The Lyceum Learning Community?

First-year students in the UHP may elect to participate in The Lyceum; it is not a requirement of the UHP. Over half of the 2005 UHP cohort elected to participate in The Lyceum.

If UHP students wish to participate in The Lyceum, they are required to reside in Shreve Hall. We believe that sharing a residential experience with other like-minded students will add to your experiences and your ability to collaborate with other students. Past Learning Community participants report that it is great to be able to study and hang out in the relaxed atmosphere of the residence. It is also a good way to ensure that you’ll be living with students who have similar interests—and it’s a great way to network.

Will being a member of The Lyceum narrow my Purdue experience?

Not at all! The Lyceum is residential only-this means that you will be enrolled in courses outside of The Lyceum, which will provide opportunities to interact with many other students. Your learning community will build a strong foundation for you, which will positively affect all of your experiences at Purdue.

Can I be in The Lyceum and another learning community?

Yes, in some cases. UHP students can take part in The Lyceum and also take courses as part of some of the other communities.

How do I apply to be in The Lyceum Learning Community?

Upon acceptance into the UHP, you will receive an application packet for The Lyceum. Placement in a Learning Community is determined by a *competitive process* based on a holistic review of your application. The Learning Community placement criteria include elements such as prior academic achievement, the date on which the application was received by the Learning Communities program staff, the Purdue school/college, major and/or program to which the applicant is admitted, and space availability.
