Faculty feedback leads to new initiatives

By Jessica Huber, interim associate vice provost for faculty affairs

In order to identify what areas are working well for faculty and what areas need attention, Purdue participated in the COACHE Survey of Faculty Job Satisfaction in 2012 and 2015, and will participate again in 2018. All tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty, research faculty and continuing lecturers are invited to take part in the online survey.

Based on faculty feedback from previous COACHE surveys, the Provost’s Office has developed a significant number of initiatives:

  • New mentoring standard requiring department heads to provide written feedback to all assistant and associate professors yearly and all full professors every three years.
  • Orientation for newly tenured professors, providing information on their new role and helping to develop a plan for promotion to full professor.
  • Clarification of promotion and tenure process (unit-specific criteria will be completed soon).
  • Monthly department head forums focusing on best management practices.
  • New Purdue Insights faculty development program focusing on critical leadership skills such as listening, consensus building, mentoring, transparency, and diversity and inclusion for faculty interested in administrative roles.
  • Professional development seminar for clinical faculty.

More initiatives are in development and will be announced soon.

The COACHE Survey of Faculty Job Satisfaction will be sent once again to eligible faculty directly from COACHE in early February. The survey is operated by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and confidentiality is guaranteed.

All eligible faculty are encouraged to participate.
