Bindery - Other Services
Perfect Binding Perfect binding- (also known as paperback) Perfect binding works on publications with at least 30 sheets (60 pages, not cost efficient) and will accommodate bound books from 1/8" to 1 1/2" in thickness. The procedure involves adhesive, which is glued along the edges of the text sheets and binds the text to a wraparound cover. The cover can also have text on the spine if you so desire. This type of binding is economical, because it is an automated process, and is good for books that don't need to lay flat. One drawback of Perfect binding is that tabs cannot be used due to trimming.
Plastic Binding Plastic binding- Also commonly called comb bind, Plastic binding is also an economical and fast way to bind. For customers who need their books to lay flat, this type of binding is ideal. Pages can easily be added or changed to these books at a later date. Black plastic is the only color in stock, but other colors are available to order. Standard colors can be in stock in two to three days, and exact PMS color matches are available at an extra cost. The maximum thickness for a plastic bound book is 1 3/4". There is no minimum sheet count requirement. The book length, or height should be 11" or less, which is in stock. Custom lengths are available.
Coil Binding Coil binding- Coil binding, or continuous loop, is similar to plastic binding but more permanent. Coil binding can fold back flat, unlike plastic binding. Pages can be added or changed later, but not easily. This type of binding is not recommended on books over 3/4" thick. As for book heights, Printing Services has 11" or less in stock, with custom lengths available. Coil binding is usually plastic, but metal is available by ordering from one of our vendors. Black is our standard color, but other colors can be ordered and exact PMS matches are available at an extra cost. Lengths (on the binding edge) must be in 1/4" increments.
Multi Binding/Saddle Stitch Saddle Stiching - Another popular method of binding is the saddle stitch booklet. Saddle Stitching consists of on-line collating, folding, stitching, and trimming. This method produces booklets that fold in half with the stitches on the fold. This binding is practical for total page counts of 60 or less. Larger sheet counts can be accommodated but perfect binding should be considered as an alternative.
Velo Binding Velo binding- Velo binding is flat, and about 1/4" wide on the edge, with no exposed holes. This is a good method for binding finished reports, however, black is the only color available. Velo binding creates a nice looking finished piece but will not lay flat. Can bind only in 11" and 8.5" lengths only. No odd lengths!
Thesis Binding Thesis binding- Thesis Binding, similar to a hard cover book, consists of 3 metal screw posts holding the cover, contents, and spine together. Accepted by the Purdue Thesis Office. Gold foil stamping on the covers is available. These are done in our BoilerCopyMaker operation located in Stewart Center.
Tape Binding Tape binding- Tape binding is performed in our bindery department. This requires stitching before taping. Tape is only available in black and only have a two inch width.
Docu Binding Docu binding- Docu binding is an automated process done directly on the docutech that requires a minimum of 10 sheets and a maximum of 125 sheets to work well. The tape comes in black, white, brown, blue, and red.

Other Services Available in Bindery - Cutting, Scoring, Perforating, Folding, Drilling, Padding, Stapling, Collating, Laminating, Foil Stamping, Die Cutting, Embossing.

Cutting Cutting - Cutting is also a function of bindery. There is a maximum sheet width of 40 inches. Cannot cut plastic, metal, or staples.
Scoring

Scoring - Scoring is needed before folding if the job is printed on cover weight stock, to create an accurate and neat fold line. For a professional looking piece, certain jobs require scoring and not folding.

Perforating Perforating - Perforating is for jobs requiring tear-offs or coupons. A slot cut perforation is available for all work, and a micro perforation is available with certain restrictions, for finer work. Perfs must run the length of the sheet. Right angle or spot perforation can be done using our network of specialty binderys.
Folding Folding - Our Bindery department also offers folding. Bindery deals with many folds, including the gate fold, the letter fold, the accordion fold, and the double parallel fold. The gate fold requires hand labor plus machine labor. Right angle folding is also available. To see more fold types see our Portfolio. We can also refold thin saddle stitch publications for mailing discounts.

Drilling Drilling - Drilling is yet another finishing procedure done in Bindery. 3-hole drill is standard, which is 3 holes on the side, but any pattern is possible. Drilled hole sizes range from 3/16" to 1/2" diameter.
Padding Padding - Padding is a procedure used in Bindery to hold books or sets together by an adhesive compound spread across the edge of the sheets. The standard number of sheets per pad is 25, 50, or 100, but a different number of sheets per pad may be selected. NCR, or carbonless forms, are an example of individual padded sets, such as our Form 3.
Stitching Stitching - Stitching, too, is a finishing procedure in Bindery. This accommodates finished printed pieces up to a 3/4" thickness. A saddle stitch is two staples on the fold of a two page spread (this is usually done on the booklet maker ). Standard stitching would be one stitch in the corner or 2 or 3 on the side.
Collating Collating - Collating is sometimes needed before a job can be finished. Collating is the process of arranging pages in sequence after printing, and it is done mostly by machine (with a few exceptions).

Laminating Laminating - Laminating is a finishing procedure used quite often and is appropriate for information that is handled frequently, or for pieces that may be exposed to moisture or a hostile environment. Laminating comes in two weights- 3 ml and 10 ml. Printing Services has a 25" width maximum. Flush trim is available, or a border, with a clear area outside the paper edge. Clear borders are more expensive to produce than flush trim. Rounded corners on borders are possible at an extra charge. Rounded corners are good for tags people wear- sharp corners may prick wearers. To laminate customer's own hard copy, paper should be neat and in one piece. Tape should run the entire length of the sheet if used at all. Printing Services will tape pieces together for laminating if a customer prefers. Color copies from wax based applications and not from heat fused applications will not laminate! For large lamination jobs, extra copies are helpful, in case a wrinkle occurs. We cannot laminate anything thicker than coverstock nor can we successfully laminate sheets with multiple layers of paper attached together.
