President France A. Córdova: Remarks regarding selection of Mitch Daniels as Purdue's 12th President
I am honored to help welcome Governor Mitch Daniels as the 12th president of Purdue University.
Governor Daniels is highly-respected in Indiana and throughout the nation for growing the state's economy through attracting jobs, businesses and investment, while at the same instilling the required fiscal discipline to create a balanced state budget and a substantial surplus during the recent recession.
I have worked with Governor Daniels for the past five years and know that he understands the importance of a higher education degree and the quality of a Purdue education. He meets regularly with me and the other public university presidents to discuss issues in higher education.
Together, Governor Daniels and I have celebrated many important initiatives that affect Purdue. Only last week we sang together the praises of the Purdue Technology Parks at their 50th anniversary celebration. We also sang the Hail Purdue fight song together at that event! Daniels lauded Purdue as an important partner in increasing economic development and job opportunities.
Governor Daniels has said that the quality of Purdue's faculty is its strength. He has personally intervened to help me retain star faculty and the companies they have created. He also understands the value of superb staff, having hired many talented staff members in his diverse leadership roles.
I know he delights in our terrific students and has spent some time with them over the past few years, including this past year when he signed the Purdue student-initiated Lifeline Bill to increase the safety of students. I know that he cherishes the creativity and energy of our students, and will continue to listen to and respect their ideas.
The challenges faced by public research universities today are great. Governor Daniels will bring a fresh perspective to these challenges. His creative thinking and skill in the legislative arena will be vital as Purdue continues to make its case for state support of its core programs.
A great university requires a great leader -- a visionary who adapts to challenges and continually devises and implements new strategies for success. Purdue is fortunate to have found a focused, experienced leader in Mitch Daniels. And he is fortunate to be joining a talented team of administrators, faculty, staff and students.
Thanks to all of you, and those who have come before you, Purdue is a world-class university. With the implementation of our strategic plan, and the development of a novel ten-year funding plan, Purdue continues its leadership in higher education. With Mitch Daniels at the head of a great team, Purdue can redefine for the state and the nation the value of a public research university.
Best wishes to all of you and to Governor Daniels.
