PURDUE UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
EXECUTIVE MEMORANDUM No. C-13
To: Deans, Directors, and Heads of Schools, Divisions, Departments,
and Offices, and Regional Campus Chancellors
Re: Benefits for Part-time faculty and Administrative/Professional
Staff
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 1, 1987
BACKGROUND:
In the early 1960's Purdue University established a program to
provide fringe benefits for hourly-paid clerical/service staff who
work half time (20 hours per week) or more on a continuing basis.
Based on recommendations from the University Compensation and Benefits
Committee and the University administration, the Board of Trustees,
at its meeting on June 26, 1987, approved a proposal to provide
fringe benefits to continuing part-time faculty and administrative/professional
staff.
POLICY:
Part-time faculty and administrative/professional staff employed
half-time or more for a period of time which is expected to continue
for more than one year are eligible to participate in the following
fringe benefit programs:
- Group health insurance.
- Long-term disability insurance.
- Term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
- Paid-up life insurance.
- University-funded retirement plans with the Public Employees
Retirement Fund (PERF) or the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association
(TIAA)/College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF), whichever is applicable
dependent upon staff classification.
- Tax-deferred annuities with University-sponsored companies.
- Purdue BeneFlex Plan including, but not limited to:
- Personal accident insurance.
- Dependent life insurance.
- Flexible spending accounts.
- Staff fee remission.
- Staff spouse remission of the non-resident tuition fee.
Restrictions, waiting periods, and any other conditions which
are related to specific benefit programs will apply. Credit for
service prior to August 1, 1987 will be granted in cases where employment
was continuing and permanent in nature. Fringe benefits will not
be provided to visiting or temporary staff, part-time lecturers,
or staff in similar classifications.
PROCEDURE:
Staff who have satisfied required waiting periods are eligible
to begin participation on August 1, 1987. The Department of Staff
Benefits, Payroll and Insurance will contact eligible staff to arrange
for benefit enrollments. Departments should ensure that new hires
are provided with benefit materials upon appointment. As literature
is updated dealing with employee benefits, these provisions will
be incorporated.
QUESTIONS:
Questions concerning benefits for part-time faculty and administrative/professional
staff should be directed to the Department of Staff Benefits, Payroll
and Insurance on the West Lafayette campus. At the Regional Campuses
questions should be directed to the chief business officer.
