PURDUE UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
EXECUTIVE MEMORANDUM No. B-39
Re: Compliance with Title IX of the Educational Amendments
of 1972
(Sex Discrimination Regulations)
Statement of Policy
It has long been the policy of the Trustees of Purdue University that the educational services and programs of the University be available and open to all academically qualified individuals regardless of sex.
More than 100 years ago, in 1874, the University catalog carried the following statement:
| "The University opens all of its courses to young women as well as to young men. No distinctions will be made in examinations, expenses or classes. They will be furnished dormitory privileges in the boarding house, equal in comfort and convenience to the quarters furnished to young men in the dormitory proper." |
Title IX of the Educational Amendments enacted by the Congress 1972 states:
| "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied thebenefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." |
The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has recently issued specific regulations concerning this act. It is University policy to comply fully with Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972.
Authority and Responsibility
Employees concerned with University compliance with Title IX in connection with employment practices should contact Dr. Hicks, Hovde Hall, 749-2110, who is Equal Employment Opportunity Officer for the University.
