Suggestion Boxes
The Purdue Police Department is placing suggestion boxes in strategic locations around campus in an effort to provide an anonymous avenue for students, staff and faculty to provide commentary regarding the police department. The idea for the suggestion boxes came from a concerned member of the Purdue community that attended a town hall meeting hosted by the Purdue Police Diversity Team at the Black Cultural Center in December. The suggestion was that the Purdue Police Department provide a way for community members to be able to make suggestions or voice concerns without being identified.
The suggestion boxes will be located in the following locations: Purdue Village Community Center, Purdue Police Department, Recreational Sports Center, Stewart Center, and the Latino Cultural Center. The boxes will be checked on a regular basis by members of the Purdue Police Department’s Diversity Team.

Purdue University Police Department Announces New K-9 Program
The Purdue University Police Department's newest member is police dog Nicky, a two-year old Dutch Shepherd. Nicky will be handled by Officer Andy Standifer. Nicky was purchased through the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office assets forfeiture program. The program seizes money and property from people arrested for drugs, and those funds are used for crime-fighting efforts throughout Tippecanoe County.
Officer Standifer recently trained with Nicky at Von Liche Kennels in Denver, IN. Nicky is considered dual-purpose and is trained in narcotics detection and suspect apprehension. Nicky will also be used for crime fighting efforts and is capable of handler protection.
Purdue Police Chief Gary Evans wants students to know that we will be respecting students' privacy but we will respond if drug use is reported in the residence halls. Purdue Police will be working with Residence Halls, the Office of the Dean of Students and Purdue Student Government.
Purdue Police Department with be partnering with the local law enforcement agencies. The addition of Nicky brings the number of local police dogs, Metro K-9, to 10, and all officers are able to assist all other police agencies as needed.
Further information may be obtained from the Purdue Website under Safety Program, K9 Unit.
Purdue police announce Laptop Computer Registration Program
Purdue University Police Department is launching an on-line laptop computer registration program on January 28, 2008, available through the Police Department’s website. This laptop registration program is very similar to the successful bicycle registration program. This program is voluntary, but highly recommended to all students, staff and faculty who own laptop computers.
The owner will be asked to provide the serial number, make and model of the laptop, through an on-line registration form. Once this form is submitted the owner will receive a confirmation advising that their registration has been received and is on file. Information provided will be maintained on file at the PUPD and available to assist investigators in the event that the registered laptop computer is stolen. It will also allow PUPD to enter the laptop into a stolen property database that is available to law enforcement officers throughout the United States. The information contained on the registration form will also assist in the return of the registered laptop if it has been reported stolen and recovered, or lost and found.
The program is designed for laptops but if anyone is interested in registering their desktop computers, the police will accommodate these requests.
Guided by a community policing philosophy, the police department offers a variety of crime prevention and educational programs. While we understand no environment is free of crime, the Purdue University Police Department is committed to partnering with our campus community to foster an environment conducive to learning, discovery, and engagement in support of the mission of Purdue University.
PUPD personnel will be available to provide assistance in completing this form. Please contact our office at 765-494-8221 or visit us at 205 S. Martin Jischke Dr., West Lafayette, Indiana. Our website it located at http://www.purdue.edu/police/
