Center Stage: Purduettes Daily Student Perspective

Tuesday August 18th, 2009

As seniors in Purduettes, we are loving it here at Camp Tecumseh. It is wonderful to have a full week of activities to start off the year right! We are truly enjoying spending time together and getting to know the New Women and Glee Club. We are learning a lot of new tunes including "Gypsies Chimpanzees" and "Big Nose Blows From the Neck Up". Today we worked on teamwork by getting in groups of seven to accomplish the task of flipping one of our sisters in song 360 degrees while attempting to keep a cup of water from spilling. Not only do we love the scrumptious food and entertaining festivities, but we also love the company!

Well it's the second day of camp and things are going great! Our day started out with morning workouts to get us up and ready for the day. We then moved in to rehearsal mode. It's amazing how much we can accomplish in one day. Our new women are especially stepping it up, and learning our music, choreography, and traditions very quickly. On a good note (no pun intended), we are in the process of adding new music to our repertoire. Coming to our show at the end of camp, or throughout this year is a must. Even though we have been working hard during our rehearsals throughout the day, we had the opportunity to spend a little time relaxing and also a little time to go to the pool. The day took a suprising turn when we went to rehearse with the Glee Club. A tornado warning was issued and our rehearsal was postponed until all was clear to leave the storm cellar. Luckily Blake Vogt entertained the group with a quick magic show. The time passed quickly and before we knew it the tornado scare had passed and we were back rehearsing in no time. All in all, we are looking forward to our show on Friday and we hope to see plenty of people there. Camp has been an experience thus far and the Junior Class of Purduettes is thrilled about the places that Purduettes is going this year. We cannot wait to see what lies ahead!

Today was our last full day of camp. It has been a great experience and we have already come so far as a group. We have especially enjoyed getting to know the New Women and finding out how their personalities and talents fit in with our existing group. The Old Women have also grown and strengthened to form a very close group in our time here at camp. We have also had the chance to spend some time with the men of the Glee Club. This has given us a chance to get to know them as well which will help make Purdue Musical Organizations stronger as an organization. We are so grateful to have had this week to get to know each other and we are very excited to start our second year at PMO! We had the pleasure of meeting our mentors this evening at camp. We are all excited to spend time with them throughout the year and to get to know them better as outstanding women. Another highlight of our evening was our Open Mic Night where we were all able to share our talents with the rest of the girls. Tomorrow we are ending our final day with a performance and then we will be ready to go back to campus to start our year!

Bill, Ted, Jeff, Jon, PMO Staff, special guests, and ladies and men of the Purduettes, we are the New Women! Although overwhelming at first, Purduettes camp was a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to bond with our new Sisters in Song. From early morning rehearsals to late night festivities, we truly united as a New Women class. Overcoming our nerves in front of the old women was but one of the many obstacles we conquered this week. Some of the other challenges we faced included mastering the art of show hair and remembering the lyrics to our songs. All of these experiences along with the guidance from our big sisters, managers, and directors have prepared us for our unveiling as Purduettes. A week ago we never imagined that we would be riding the bus back to PMO after our first official show as new women. After going through Purduette "boot camp" we are now thoroughly prepared for this upcoming school year. We look forward to all the experiences, such as Christmas Show, that PMO has to offer. One last question..." Ladies, do you know your flash cards?""Yes, ma'am!"
