HIGH VOLTAGE PROJECT

Stewart Center

Schedule | Milestones | Photos

Schedule:

  • Construction phase: January 7 to April 18, 2008

Milestones:

  • SHUTDOWN, December 27: The electrical service to STEW will be shutdown on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at 6:00 p.m. for three to six hours. This shutdown will enable crews to connect the buildings to the mobile substations, which will be used for the duration of the High Voltage upgrades at STEW.
  • The high voltage project begins January 7 and is expected to be complete by April 18, 2008. The following conditions will affect dock access at Stewart during this time:
    • The high voltage project will have two fenced areas on the north side of STEW. One will be on the east side of the loading dock, around the high voltage vault, and the second will be an approximately 10-12' wide area running from the loading dock back to the manhole, adjacent to the ramp on the west side of the dock. This fencing will contain two mobile substations, as well as the high voltage cables running from the manhole to the mobile subs.
    • High voltage project contractors will be parked alongside the fenced vault area, or inside this fencing.
    • The 4th floor library renovation project's dumpster will remain in place at the end of the ramp, on the west side of the loading dock.
    • Space will be allotted between this dumpster and the fenced area to allow ramp access for golf carts.
    • The trash compactor will be remain available, with the exception of a day or two when it will need to be shutdown for re-wiring. This trash compactor will be relocated to the west of yellow poles as it was last summer.
    • Space between the trash compactor and the fenced mobile substations should be sufficient to accommodate two trucks at a time for loading/unloading. The elevator will be accessible.

Due to these conditions, parking and access at the dock is be very limited.

  • Feb. 27: The existing transformers hae been removed. The new tranformer and concrete pads are being installed, and the vaults will be painted. In the next two weeks, new switch gear and bus duct will be installed. The project is proceeding on schedule at this time.
  • March 14: Two new transfomers were damaged when being transported to the new vaults. The project's completion may be delayed.
  • March 19: Crews are working on the installation of the following: transformer pad, primary conduit, switch gear, and bus duct. The damaged transformers are being repaired at the manufacturer. STEW will remain connected to the mobile substations until the new transformers arrive.
  • March 26: Installation of primary conduit and bus duct is nearing completion. Grounding in the vault is being terminated. In the next two weeks, lighting in the vault will be installed, and medium voltage cables will be terminated and tested.
  • April 9: A failed connector in one of the mobile subs failed yesterday, causing a temporary power outage at STEW and other campus buildings. The mobile sub was repaired that night. See photos below.
  • April 30: The repaired transformers have arrived and been installed. Other work with cables and busduct is being finalized. A switchover to the new permanent power supply is expected to take place in the next two weeks, pending scheduling concerns.
  • SHUTDOWN, May 23: The electrical service to STEW and HIKS will be shutdown on Friday, May 23, 2008, at 5:30pm and last 3-6 hours. This shutdown is required to make the transition back to normal power from the temporary substations.
  • Photos of the completed vault upgrades are available below.
