HIGH VOLTAGE PROJECT

Hovde Hall
Schedule | Milestones | Photos

The Hovde Hall project will include the installation of new ductbank into the vault, as well as the vault upgrade and repair work.

Schedule:

Hovde Hall
  • Bid date: May 4, 2006
  • Board of Trustees meeting: June 2, 2006
  • Construction phase: First week of June to September 19, 2006

Milestones:

  • The portable primary cable (high voltage) was run through the tunnel.
  • The mobile substations were positioned on the sidewalk in front of Hovde, on the south side of Purdue Mall (see photo below).

  • June 1: Hovde's power feed was converted to the mobile substation and the vault was shut down.
  • June 8: Old electrical equipment has been removed from the deactivated vault (see photos below).
  • June 9:
    • The Engineering Fountain in front of Hovde remains off until a new transformer is delivered by the contractor. Delivery may take up to two additional weeks.
    • Crews are excavating Manhole 19 to replace the frame and lid. The installation of the new duct bank will begin today or Monday June 12.
  • June 14: The vault lid has been removed.
  • June 21: The Engineering Fountain in front of Hovde Hall is now operational (see photo below). Both the water flow and lighting have been restored.
  • June 22: The concrete pad is in place for the ductbank.
  • June 28: The ductbank conduits have been installed and the concrete poured. Concrete repairs to the vault roof are complete. The new vault roof has been poured.
  • July 21: The ductbank is complete and the sidewalk concrete has been replaced.
  • August 2: Exterior work is complete (see photos). Fencing has been removed and new sod was placed to restore the landscaping. The only equipment that remains are the mobile substations and the fencing around them. The mobile subs will be removed once all of the installation in the vault is complete and the building has been connected to the 12.47 kV power.
  • August 9: Interior work is nearly complete. All electrical equipment has been installed. Crews are completing the last necessary steps to finish the vault. An electrical shutdown has been scheduled for this Friday to switch Hovde's electrical system from the mobile substations to the new transformers powered by the 12.47 kV supply. See the "before and after" photos of the vault below.
