Reason for Policy
Secondhand
smoke is a mixture of smoke that is emitted into the air
from a lit cigarette, cigar, or pipe, and smoke that is exhaled
into the air. It causes premature death in nonsmokers and
is a preventable health risk.
Secondhand smoke is identified as a Group A carcinogen (cancer-causing
agent) under the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
carcinogen assessment guidelines. Secondhand smoke has been
shown to cause heart disease, cancer, respiratory problems,
and eye and nasal irritation.
The EPA has determined there is no safe exposure level to
secondhand smoke. It is the purpose of this policy
to provide for the rights of smokers while minimizing exposure
to secondhand smoke.
Smoking cessation assistance is available through WorkLife
Programs, the Student Wellness Office, and the College of
Nursing.
