Outside Employment and Other
Outside Activities
Purdue employees may not accept appointments, engage
in any business, or otherwise divert their attention
from University duties without appropriate approvals.
This regulation covers: (a) connection with any business
enterprise as owner, partner, officer, director, consultant,
or agent; (b) connection with any public office either
by election, appointment, or employment; and (c) connection
with any professional association, educational institution,
or foundation as trustee, officer, lecturer, or representative.
Due to the nature of their appointments and responsibilities,
outside employment and other outside activities of
clerical and service staff members may not divert their
attention from University duties. However, if for a
specific outside activity, interference with normal
University duties may occur, University approval may
be required and clerical or service staff members should
consult their supervisor.
A request for permission to engage in all such outside
activities is required annually on President’s
Office Form 32A. Further, an employee engaged in activities
that involve an interest in a business enterprise that
expects to derive a profit from any University contract
or purchase must file a Conflict of Interest Disclosure
Statement on President’s Office Form C-1 on an
annual basis. In these situations, approvals do not
permit use of the University’s name or the staff
member’s title in any announcement, advertisement,
publication, or report, if such use in any way implies
University endorsement of any product or service. Travel
and Absence From Campus forms must be completed and
approved, as necessary, in conducting the outside activity.
Consulting work that does not interfere with teaching
or research and that involves a payment of personal
compensation may be performed upon approval by the
president. Reports on consulting projects may not be
made on Purdue stationery. Whenever a requested outside
activity requires the use of Purdue facilities or equipment,
or any other Purdue resource, permission must be secured
from the proper head. The University will charge for
this use of University facilities, equipment, or other
University resources using a recharge rate established
through regular University business office procedures.
