Sponsored Research and Educational
Programs
Purdue regards research as one of its most vital and essential missions, because research prevents knowledge from becoming obsolete while increasing the storehouse of information available to humankind. The performance of interesting and important research also attracts quality graduate and undergraduate students to the University.
Because funds from the state of Indiana are insufficient for the large number of research and educational programs of the quality desirable at Purdue, assistance from industrial concerns, governmental agencies, and foundations has helped Purdue to further develop its programs. The University welcomes support from outside sources, whether in the form of contracts or grants. Such support enables faculty members to carry their programs forward more rapidly than would otherwise be possible.
Sponsored
Program Services (SPS) and the Office
of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) provide a
variety of services relating to the sponsored research
and educational programs at the University. These include
assisting faculty in making contacts with potential
research sponsors, helping in the organization of interdisciplinary
projects, negotiating research agreements with industrial
sponsors, administering the University patent and copyright
policies, and communicating University interests to
the Indiana Congressional delegation. In general, SPS
provides assistance in regard to research projects and
instructional and educational programs. Responsibilities
include the review, approval, and submission of proposals
for research, instructional, and most other externally
sponsored programs.
Staff members interested in research (or other sponsored project) support communicate their desires through their department heads and deans, or directly to OVPR or SPS.
Sponsored funds for research, instructional, or educational projects are granted to the University for instructional or educational projects. SPS is responsible for fiscal negotiations and fiscal control for all sponsored programs.
Once a grant is accepted or a contract has been signed by authorized officials, SPS establishes an account in the University accounting system for the project. The principal investigator is responsible for the expenditure of funds to benefit the project in accordance with established fiscal policies.
