Private Tutoring

A variety of resources is available in the Purdue and greater Lafayette community.  Below are the names of individuals offering private ESL instruction.  We provide this list as a courtesy to students and non-students alike, but we cannot be responsible for the quality of services provided.  Please contact these individuals directly for information on their fees for services.

Students who would like ESL instruction are also encouraged to consider the options listed on our list of Community Resources in ESL


Mary Maxine Browne - Mary Maxine is fluent in Dutch, German and Spanish, and has long-term experience living as a foreigner abroad in the Netherlands, Great Britain, and Canada. Her professional background is in writing, literature, and theatre. Mary Maxine specializes in accent reduction with ESL students and has been active as a long-term private ESL tutor for many Purdue international students. She also has several years experience teaching and tutoring ESL students in her capacities as an instructor for ENGL 106 Writing Composition as well as serving for five years as the writing tutor for a Purdue graduate course in grant and proposal writing.  Concurrent to these activities, she also edits for ESL writers at Purdue who are completing masters' and doctoral theses. Heather Day - Heather emigrated to the United States from England as a high school student.  She has lived and worked in four countries, and she has studied and continues to study several languages.  Her B.A. is in French and she holds two Master's degrees.  Heather has worked as a professional librarian, and has had experience in editing, grant-writing, and compiling bibliographies for publication.  Currently, Heather teaches academic writing classes and TOEFL at the ESOL Program, Purdue Village and tutors ESL students (of all ages) in conversation, writing, and test preparation.  She also has an editing service with special prices for students.  She can be reached at 743-1197 (home), or at the ESOL Program, 494-0500.  Heather's e-mail address is heatherday@purdue.edu.

Mary Gitzen - Mary received her Ph.D. in English from Purdue in May 2002.  With over 30 years experience teaching students from pre-K to adult, Mary has specialized in teaching ESL for the past 12 years, focusing especially on pronunciation and fluency, everyday conversation, and business communication.  She can be reached at 743-9465 (home), or e-mail magitz@purdue.edu.

Jeff Katz - Jeff has a B.S. in Biology from Purdue.  He was a volunteer tutor, a teacher's aide, and finally a teacher at the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy where he had a now-expired Indiana teacher's license.  Jeff has been teaching English to visiting professors and scholars, PhD students, and their spouses since 1999.  He enjoys helping students improve their confidence (ja-shin-gam) and pronunciation by talking and reading about subjects of interest with them in a relaxed atmosphere.  Jeff can be reached by phone any day until midnight at 765-586-5966 or by e-mail at katz1803@gmail.com

Beth Lageveen - Beth has been teaching English to international students for over ten years.  She has an MS degree from Purdue in Education and holds a current Indiana teaching certificate.  She has taught in the Oral English Proficiency Program at Purdue University, for Tippecanoe School Corporation's Adult ESL program, Purdue's ESOL program, and for IOR Global Services.  Beth tutors students of all ages and levels.  She also tutors long-distance on Skype. Beth enjoys helping students with conversation skills, pronunciation, and acclimating to the U.S.  She can be reached in the evenings at 765-743-8218 or by e-mail, blagevee@purdue.edu.

SuLing Lim - SuLing is a graduate student in Speech Language Pathology at Purdue.  She received her B.S. in Speech Language Pathology from Miami University in 2010, and has a minor in Chinese.  She is from Malaysia, and therefore is also fluent in Malay.  During her undergraduate years she studied Chinese abroad at Peking University, China.  Due to her major, SuLing has experience with adults as well as children in terms of pronunciation, intonation, accent modification, conversation skills, and fluency.  She can be contacted via e-mail (lim79@purdue.edu) or by phone 513-377-7071.

Beth Tucker - Beth is an immigration counselor at Purdue who has worked with international students and ESL students for the past 20 years. She has a B.Ph. in Linguistics with TESOL certification and MA in Intercultural Studies. Prior to working as an international student advisor for six years, Beth taught ESL for 3 years in Taipei and Taichung, Taiwan. She also taught ESL to U.S. immigrants in three community college programs in Chicago, Illinois.  She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has studied Spanish. She is available for tutoring in pronunciation, conversation, and writing, in the evenings and on weekends and can be reached at 418-7796, or email her at tuckerb@purdue.edu.
